This band from Birmingham - originally called "The Rockin' Jaymen" - were very well known locally during the early 1960s. Along with Keith Powell's Valets and Mike Sheridan's Nightriders, "Pat Wayne and The Beachcombers" were one of the city's top live acts at that time. The line-up had a very BIG sound in having two saxophones with the later addition of keyboards.
Patrick Curley was from Ladywood, Birmingham and worked as a waiter at the Grand Hotel on Colmore Row. He changed his name to "Pat Wayne" in 1957 when he formed a skiffle group called "The Deltas" with guitarist Dave Husthwaite. By the late 1950s The Deltas had become a polished act and wearing matching red suits, had won the BBC Six-Five Special talent contest held for local bands at the Gaumont Cinema. Pat later made an appearance on television which gave him his first real taste of fame.
Before the band's first single could be released, the record company decided the name Rockin' Jaymen might be confused with "Peter Jay and The Jaywalkers", a group from East Anglia. Somebody at Columbia suggested "The Beachcombers" and so they became "Pat Wayne and The Beachcombers"

The Trekkas History
"...The Trekkas grew out of a group called The Druids who like most other bands in 1961 mainly played instrumentals. I only passed the audition with the band in Barry Fairbrother's back bedroom because I knew the chords to “Peace Pipe”! The original line up was Barry Fairbrother (lead), Ron Baird (bass) Martyn Day (rhythm), Pip Bolt (drums) and Sean Ryan (vocals and acrobatics). Early in 1962 after a disastrous gig in Brookman’s Park – the only place I’ve been to where they had bouncers on the door chucking people IN – we decided to change personnel and our name. Possible ideas included “The Thin Red Line”, “Rasputin and the Disputing Four” and “Far Canal”. My own favourite was “Far Canal” but decided against it when we heard it said out loud! We settled on The Trekkas..."
