THE MIRAGE - Tomorrow Never Knows

Tomorrow Never Knows - The Pop Sike World of the Mirage: Singles & Lost Sessions

Although an unauthorized Mirage CD compilation (You Can't Be Serious) combining some of their singles with unreleased material made its appearance around 2000, this official anthology is preferable for its better sound quality and thorough liner notes. Tomorrow Never Knows — The Pop Sike World of the Mirage: Singles & Lost Sessions is still not a complete document of the group, featuring just six of the tracks that appeared on their eight singles (some of which were issued under different names than the Mirage), though it does offer a whopping 17 unreleased cuts, some of which didn't show up on You Can't Be Serious. As a band obviously inspired by the Beatles, the Hollies, and to a lesser degree by the Who and the Kinks, the Mirage were more convincing emulators than most, though they still weren't as original or as inspiring as their role models. The best comparison might be to the Hollies as they were moving from British Invasion pop to psychedelia-influenced pop — there's more ambition at work here than the average British Invasion group, but it's not nearly as far out or cutting edge as the Beatles and the Who were by the late '60s. If you're looking for comparisons, some of them are in-your-face; "You Can't Be Serious" can't fail to bring to mind "Nowhere Man"-era Beatles with a dash of the Hollies. Meanwhile, the demo of "Lazy Man" is a rip-off of "Rain"; although it was rearranged so that the similarity was far more subtle by the time it had been re-recorded for a 1967 single, the rearrangement in turn borrowed heavily from the Who circa "Happy Jack." There's also their brave interpretation of "Tomorrow Never Knows" for a 1966 single, and while that track has its novelty value as a cover of a Lennon-McCartney tune rarely done by other artists, its far more basic rock arrangement can in no way stand up to the brilliant psychedelic original. The Mirage's strongest suit was probably their slightly spooky, almost churchy story-songs, like "The Wedding of Ramona Blair" (the most famous of their official 45s among '60s collectors) and "Mrs. Buzby." These are strong enough to make this release of some interest to those who treasure that time when British Invasion pop/rock, mod, and psychedelia crossed to some extent, though the Mirage were more competent executors of those trends than innovators.

After cutting some fine folk-rock and psychedelia on ultra-rare records with his group the Exiles, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Merrell Fankhauser moved to Los Angeles, retitled his backing group H.M.S. Bounty, and recorded a fine, if obscure, slice of pop-psychedelia in 1968, Things. The diverse offerings on the group's sole LP recalled such fellow Californian heavyweights as the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Moby Grape, and even Captain Beefheart. They weren't quite in the same league as those legends, but the album has a light and enigmatic air all its own, and is well worth investigation by fans of late-'60s West Coast psychedelia. The group evolved into the interesting mystical avant-garde/blues/progressive rock group Mu in the early '70s.

The Honeybus - At Their Best

Mp3\143Mb

******

The story of Honeybus is almost a cautionary tale. Considering that most have never heard of them, it's amazing to ponder that they came very close, in the eyes of the critics, to being Decca Records' answer to the Rubber Soul-era Beatles. The harmonies were there, along with some catchy, hook-laden songs and usually tastefully overdubbed brass and violins. The pop sensibilities of Honeybus' main resident composers, Pete Dello and Ray Cane, were astonishingly close in quality and content to those of Paul McCartney and the softer sides of John Lennon of that same era. What's more, the critics loved their records. Yet, somehow, Honeybus never got it right; they never had the right single out at the proper time, and only once in their history did they connect with the public for a major hit, in early 1968 they hit the spot with 'I Can't Let Maggie Go'. Their best known lineup consisted of Pete Dello (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Ray Cane (vocals, bass, keyboards), Colin Hare (rhythm guitar, vocals), and Pete Kircher (drums, vocals), with Dello and Cane writing most of their songs.
'Honeybus at their best' is 25-song compilation containing The Honeybus Story as well as all of the singles, including 'I Can't Let Maggie Go,' and lots of rare takes. Strangely enough, 'Maggie' doesn't hold up as that good a song next to some of the rest, and many of Ray Cane's numbers actually come off as more memorable than many of Dello's songs. The group's 1969 recordings, featuring Kelly's guitar in lieu of an excess of overdubbed instruments, are generally the strongest body of work here. Hare's 'Would You Believe,' a country-style number (making him the group's 'Ringo Starr') also comes off as a refreshing change of pace. Some of the songs suffer from a degree of sameness, but most of the music contains enough surprises to make it interesting.

Dutch freakbeat band the Zipps formed in Dordrecht, the Netherlands in the fall of 1965. Lead guitarist Peter Nuyten and drummer John Noce Santoro previously teamed in the Moving Strings, who issued a pair of singles on the Delta label before dissolving, while singer/guitarist Philip Elzerman and vocalist Jan Bek came to the Zipps lineup from the Beat Town Skifflers, and bassist Theo Verschoor tenured in the Twilights. More than any other band, the Smoke epitomized the groove of Swinging London — which was especially ironic when one considers that, at the height of their success, they sold more records in Europe than England. Their sound fell somewhere between mod and the Beatles — their instrumental attack was somewhat Who/Small Faces-like, yet they delighted in cheerful vocals and infectious harmonies and melodies. Only slightly popular on their home turf, and unknown in the U.S., their biggest success was in Germany (oddly enough, for such a British-sounding group). The band hailed from York, where bassist Zeke Lund and lead guitarist Mal Luker began playing together in a band called Tony Adams & the Viceroys, whose lineup eventually ... Read More...

THE GANTS - ROAD RUNNER ! (THE BEST OF)

Mp3\63Mb
**********
One of the relatively few garage bands from the Deep South to make a national impression in the mid-'60s, the Gants hit the Top 50 in 1965 with their cover of "Roadrunner." Liberty Records then preceded to bleed the band dry by issuing three cover-heavy albums and five more singles in the next year and a half. They deserved better, because lead singer and guitarist Sid Herring was a performer and songwriter of some talent. Too Beatlesque to be considered a garage band in the usual mold, their original material approximated elements of the Fab Four's sound circa 1965 with a blend of mid-tempo acoustic and electric guitars, close harmonies, and a slight country feel. Herring himself sounded like Lennon, and he wasn't above reworking melodic phrases from "In My Life" and "From Me to You." The strong material tended to be dwarfed by their rushed, cover-heavy albums, and the group never had another hit after "Roadrunner."

Leeds-born Jeff Christie (b. 1946) entered music by way of a skiffle band that eventually moved into rock & roll, taking the name the Outer Limits. They eventually cut a pair of singles, before breaking up, and Jeff Christie decided to try a career as a songwriter. His demo tape made its way to Tremeloes' guitarist Alan Blakely, and happened to be heard by his brother, drummer Mike Blakely, formerly of the Epics and the Acid Gallery. Both were impressed enough with Christie's songs to arrange a recording session in London where the Tremeloes participated as Christie's backing band — none of the sides from that session saw the light of day, but inspired by ... Biography1947 to 1967: Early yearsDavid Robert Jones was born in Brixton, London, to a father from Tadcaster in Yorkshire and a mother from an Irish family; Bowie's parents were married shortly after his birth. When he was six years old, his family moved from Brixton to Bromley in Kent, where he attended the Bromley Technical High School. When Bowie was fifteen years old, his friend George Underwood, wearing a ring on his finger, punched him in the left eye during a fight over a girl. Bowie was forced to stay out of school for eight months so that doctors could conduct operations to repair his potentially-blinded eye. Doctors could not fully repair the damage, leaving his pupil permanently dilated. As a result of the injury, Bowie has faulty depth perception. Bowie has stated that although he can see with his injured eye, his colour vision was mostly lost and a brownish tone is constantly present. The colour of the irises is still the same blue, but since the pupil of the injured eye is wide open, the colour of that eye is commonly mistaken to be different Despite the fight, Underwood and Bowie remained good friends, and Underwood went on to do the artwork for Bowie's earlier albums ... For many years these songs were hidden in a file cabinet. Long gone from Bowie's ever shifting memory, and lost forever from his fans. Luckily, they were finally discovered and released. Early On is nicely packaged and deserves a five star rating. "Liza Jane" sang by Bowie (then Jones) and backed up by The Kingbees. "Liza Jane" is a great song, and though many believe sounds too much like The Rolling Stones, I believe these songs were the foundation of what Bowie's music is all about today. .. Read more

Gary Farr & The T-Bones - The T-Bones With Gary Farr (1966)

Mp3\133Mb
***
Gary Farr was best known for his work with the T-Bones, beginning in the early '60s and extending well into the '80s. He was born to British heavyweight boxing champion Tommy Farr, and grew up with a love of folk and blues music. He began to play in pubs and clubs around Sussex, until he finally put the T-Bones together. The lineup changed continually, including a short stint from keyboardist Keith Emerson, and even scored the spot as the resident band at London's Crawdaddy Club after the Yardbirds left it. The band was a live sensation, but in its long existence it never quite broke out of the underground and eventually disbanded in the late '80s. ~ (Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide)
T-Bones : One of the many British R&B groups fighting for attention in 1964 and 1965, the T-Bones (not to be confused with the American group that had an instrumental hit in 1965 with "No Matter What Shape") were reared in the shadow of the Yardbirds, sharing their manager (Giorgio Gomelsky), taking over their residency at London's famed Marquee club, and confounding collectors when a picture of the Yardbirds appeared on a French T-Bones EP. A decent, energetic act, they lacked the interpretative vision of the Yardbirds and other major British bands on the R&B scene and, like so many of the era's groups, had virtually no songwriting acumen. Keith Emerson was briefly a member, and lead singer Gary Farr recorded some solo albums. Gomelsky licensed a lot of material by his former bands haphazardly all over the world, and the T-Bones were not spared, accounting for the availability of a lot of unissued material this extremely minor band recorded in the mid-'60s. ~ (Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide)

The Seeds:

Jan Savage - Guitar
Daryl Hooper - Keyboards
Rick Andridge - Drums
Best known for their rock & roll standard "Pushin' Too Hard," the Seeds combined the raw, Stonesy appeal of garage rock with a fondness for ragged, trashy psychedelia. And though they never quite matched the commercial peak of their first two singles, "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," the band continued to record for the remainder of the '60s, eventually delving deep into post-Sgt. Pepper's psychedelia and art rock. None of their new musical directions resulted in another hit single, and the group disbanded at the turn of the decade.Sky Saxon (born Richard Marsh; vocals) and guitarist Jan Savage formed the Seeds with keyboardist Daryl Hooper and drummer Rick Andridge... Review
by Joe Viglione
The Seeds were an exceptional band that never achieved the success that they inspired. This album has a truly psychedelic cover with too-dark-for-pastel colors, swirling letters over eerie faces, and dynamic black and white photos on the back. If you want to see the image of Iggy Pop clothed, just look at Sky Saxon in the bottom right photo on the back cover with the screaming girl holding a flower grabbing at him. He had the image down, as well as the music. "900 Million People Daily All Making Love" sounds so much like the Doors and Jim Morrison's "When the Music's Over," one has to wonder which came first, or did they copy each other? "Mumble and Bumble" is a trippy "Alabama Song," but where Morrison is looking for the next whiskey bar, Saxon is off looking for flowers and magic mushrooms. The band has great energy which is pierced by annoying canned applause а la the Rolling Stons' Got Live If You Want It. This is a record album, not a situation comedy TV show, after all; what's the point of overdubbing an audience onto what is really good music? Sure, "No Escape" is a prelude to the closer and hit "Pushin' Too Hard" with a tip of the hat to Martha & the Vandellas, while "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" is placed nicely in mid-set, a song after the truncated "Up in Her Room." The revelation that is this "concert" album is what a great band the Seeds really were, and how Sky Saxon's vocals have a gritty edge that he held back on us in many of the studio recordings. "Gypsy Plays His Drums" has a great chug-chug guitar, nice off-key backing vocals, and a driving pulse which is present throughout the performance. If you can ignore the extraneous additions, a song like "Forest Outside Your Door" shows really how creative and influential this pioneering band was, while "Satisfy You" is Saxon's direct sexual rock to Mick Jagger's "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." Sky claims he can get satisfaction, and can satisfy you at the same time. He then veers off into more familiar psychedelic territory with "Night Time Girl" which combines the sex and the psychedelia. If they taught rock & roll in school, "Raw & Alive" would have to be the textbook for image, design, and content.

EXIT - Exit (1975)

Mp3\76Mb
*******
Review by Stanton Swihart
The sole album from Swiss progressive rockers Exit originally came out in 1975 in a run of only 350 copies, so the Black Rills import LP reissue edition is worth tracking down, despite that dramatic flux in musical quality. The band played an oddball mix that doesn't work at times, particularly when the band is playing its prog by the numbers. As a result, it is only interesting perhaps half the time. But when it is interesting, it really is extremely thrilling stuff, like a cross between mid-'60s American garage rock, the ominous keyboard conjurings of the Doors, the rave-ups of the Yardbirds, Krautrock, and European art rock. When Exit sticks to lean, ballsy American-style garage-psych grooves, the results are usually outstanding. When keyboard player Roman Portail echoes Ray Manzarek's foreboding and complex lines, the results are often superb. And when the band delivers its bizarre, Krautrock-like mania (unfortunately too infrequently), the results are generally inspired. That's what makes the 13-minute "Talk Around" the album's standout track and centerpiece. It opens with an awesomely tight and greasy garage groove, over which Exit layers a Doors-by-way-of-"96 Tears" organ line. The song then jumps into a freakish but fantastic synth weird-out that could be the aural equivalent of vertigo, before turning gothic and Lovecraft-ian. But the album ends on a yawn with the final "Bud Gossip," where Exit slows things down to ballad speed despite the fact that the song has nary a melody to speak of. A disappointing finale for an album that is, at the very least, intermittently inspiring.

Bo Street Runners, 1960's RnB
-when the blues was in black and white
****
Formed in 1964 in Harrow, Middlesex, England, the Bo Street Runners initially comprised John Dominic (vocals), Gary Thomas (lead guitar), Royston Fry (keyboards), Dave Cameron (bass) and Nigel Hutchinson (drums). Within months of forming they recorded a self-financed EP that was sold at Harrow's Railway Hotel, where the group held a residency. When Cameron's mother sent a copy of the disc to the producers of ATV's Ready, Steady, Go!, the Bo Street Runners were added to the list of competitors in the show's talent contest, "Ready, Steady, Win!". The group won, securing a prized contract with Decca Records. "Bo Street Runner" duly became their debut single, but despite the publicity, it failed to chart. Glyn Thomas and Tim Hinkley then replaced Hutchinson and Fry, while Dave Quincy was added on saxophone. Two singles for Columbia Records ensued, "Tell Me What You're Gonna Do" and "Baby Never Say Goodbye", the latter of which lost out to the original version by Unit Four Plus Two. Thomas was then replaced by Mick Fleetwood, and with Quincy departing for Chris Farlowe, the reshaped Bo Street Runners released a version of the Beatles' "Drive My Car" in January 1966. Fleetwood was then replaced in turn by Alan Turner and Barrie Wilson, and when Dominic opted to manage the group, Mike Patto joined as vocalist. The Bo Street Runners disbanded late in 1966, after which Patto recorded a solo single, "Can't Stop Talkin' 'Bout My Baby". The b-side, "Love", represented the final Bo Street Runners recording. Patto was reunited with Hinkley in the Chicago Line Blues Band, before joining Timebox, who in turn evolved into Patto. Not to be confused with the American band of the same name.

The Shamrocks - The 60's beat (1966)

Mp3\119Mb
***********
A good deal of confusion remains about the true origins of this band, which released a solid album of British Invasion-styled R&B in the mid-'60s on Ariola in Germany.
Some think that they, like many groups of the time, were a British outfit based in Germany; to obfuscate matters further, there was a popular Swedish band called the Shamrocks in the same era.
Regardless, their 1966 album is very much in the style of raw British R&B/rockers like the Pretty Things and Downliners Sect, and though there's virtually nothing in the way of original material or approach, it's energetically executed.
While this is stuffed with the same kind of Chess R&B covers that were staples of untold numbers of British bands in the mid-'60s, they're played with acceptably raunchy flair on this LP, especially on the cover of Bo Diddley's "Nursery Rhyme," which exemplifies the style at its best (review by Richie Unterberger, all music guide).

DRNWYN - Gypsies in the mist (1978)

Drnwyn - Gypsies In the Mist1978
First time ever reissue of the hard to find sole album by US duo drnwyn. Wonderful record that has some very cool psychedelic moments (especially the track "The madman and the angel"), and a good number of fabulous folk rock midtempos. There's drums, bass and lots of acoustic guitars in here, but also electric leads, keys, mandolin and multi-part vocals with some female chorus as well. But most important, very well-crafted songs from start to finish. This was a private release back in 1978, and a very recommended album for those into folk-psych and folk-rock.
David W. Hoag - Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, Synthesizer, Vocals
John Volio - Acoustic Guitar, Vocals
Randy Pregibon - Electric Guitar
Kevin McIlvainde - Bass
Larry Davis - Drums
Greg Smith - Keyboards

Eric and the Norsemen - Eric and the Norsemen (1966)

Eric & The Norsemen: From the mid-60s to the early 70s, few bands in Kansas worked the crowds as hard as Eric & The Norsemen. Led by Roger Johnson, they epitomized the garage bands of the era, covering the latest hits with a few original songs thrown into the mix. Entertaining at weekend dances and high school proms, they built a loyal following across the plains
in the beginningIn the Fall of 1964, the original members of Eric and the Norsemen - Roger, Mike, Kenny and Jimmy - were students at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. Roger and Mike were college roommates at the Lambda Chi fraternity. Roger played guitar. Mike was learning. In the spirit of the times, they decided to form a band. Another fraternity member, Ken Kramer, heard them practicing and offered to play bass guitar. Not only was he a really good bass player, but he even hand-built his custom electric bass. They decided to call the band "Eric and the Norsemen" and starting looking for a drummer. A girl that Roger knew suggested Jim Kocher, a very talented drummer who had started KU that fall. Roger and Mike talked "Jimmy" into joining the band, and the three of them would stay together for all of the Norsemen years... Read more..

BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Meet the Outcasts!/The Mod Sound of the Arkay IV
***
Review by Tim Sendra
In 1993, Collectables released Meet the Outcasts!/The Mod Sound of the Arkay IV, which contained two complete albums by two 60's garage bands. Meet the Outcasts!, released on Collectables in 1985, collects singles, live tracks and previously unreleased songs by the New Jersy based Outcasts and The Mod Sound of the Arkay IV, also originally released on Collectables, collects tracks by the Erie, PA band the Arkay IV recorded between 1966 and 1968.

The Outcasts
Biography by Richie Unterberger One of several American garage bands to use the Outcasts name in the '60s, this Long Island, NY outfit was a very typical act of the era, performing the usual garage raunch, White soul, Monkees-like pop, and Donovanish flower power. They only issued two singles, but an entire album of material was fabricated for release in the 1980s by embellishing the officially released cuts with live performances and previously unreleased songs. Archival diligence notwithstanding, it's not worth tracking down, even for garage diehards.
The Arkay IV
Arkay IV were a Pennsylvania-based Garage Rock outfit that put out one record and a few singles during the late '60s. They originally began with heavy leanings towards the Merseybeat sound, but evolved into a more soul and pop-oriented group. Considered lightweight, they still had a knack for melodies and a penchant for moody organ sounds.

I really enjoy listening to the music of Arkay IV. I was surprised to learn that there have been a number of musical projects put together by the original members, including the Lakeland Rangers. I found the Arkay IV page on myspace and have found that all the bands are connected. I'm enjoying the music and look forward to being able to buy and download their mp3 versions. This if I remember right was a battle of the bands album, and after hearing it I feel that Long Island's Outcasts won by a nose. I'm actually looking for the album "Meet The Outcasts" where it has 2 rather boss songs from 1965 when they were called "The Radiators" with "Nothing But Love", and "Something About You". The rest of this could sound like they were trying to imitate The Left Banke, or The Hassles take your pick. The Arkay 4 not one song was good. I probably wouldn't have liked it back in my late ***** early 20's neither. With 60's punk sometimes it's terrific others not so terrific. This is one of the not so's

The Outcasts - Live! Standing Room Only [LIVE] 1967

Mp3\70Mb
*********
ReviewThere's nothing earth-shattering about the 44 minutes of live material represented on this CD -- it's just a well-played set by one of the better garage bands working on New York's Long Island during the mid-'60s. But that's sort of the point -- precious little of that scene survives in so pure and unadulterated a form as you get to hear here, and depend upon it, this is worth hearing. Near as one can make out, the Long Island group the Outcasts (as distinct from the similarly named bands from Texas and elsewhere) were an enthusiastic, talented outfit, capable of doing live covers of numbers like "Mustang Sally" and "Hang On Sloopy" for audiences of the day, often with a lot of verve and spirit, which does get picked up on this performance. Additionally, the choice of some of their covers -- "In the Midnight Hour" and "Satisfaction" are not surprising choices, but Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and the Stones' "Play With Fire" -- shows some more serious musical ambitions, the ability to do more than deliver a beat, and a willingness to demand a little more out of an audience; this show also contains what seems to be their first attempt to do Van Morrison's "Gloria" on-stage, and they do surprisingly well with it. The singing is above average, and these boys were nothing if not rehearsed and experienced, but not so much so that their instrumental attack isn't bracing throughout, and this reviewer liked the swirling organ break on "Hey Joe." The live set has been augmented with the presence of an unreleased 1967 single, "Society's Child" b/w "Get It On," which shows the band in a more controlled setting and still able to play up a storm. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

Sure the sound is muddy, but the equipment was primitive to say the least. These live recordings by Manhasset Long Island's own Outcasts recall the halcyon days of my own mis-spent youth. The Outcasts were featured at local church dances, (The Christ Church & The Congreational Church in Manahsset) country clubs and those great Battle of the Bands, where they duked it out againt the local compition, The Rogues, Dark-Side and The Cellar Dwellers. Check this baby out especially if you were there way back in the mid sixties. Listen to Mark, Brian, Bobby, Bruce and Chuck as they cover The likes of Hey Joe, Hang On Sloopy, Gloria, Midnight Hour and Love Potion Number 9 (or was it Love Potion 69). I sure had a blast at those old dances and this set really brings back a bundle of memories from those magical days.
