The Peanut Butter Conspiracy - Spreading From The Ashes

With 26 tracks from 1966 and 1967, this CD acts as a comprehensive supplement to the Peanut Butter Conspiracy's more widely circulated recordings for Columbia and Challenge. While seven of these recordings found official release in 1966 and 1967 on the Vault label, the rest were previously unissued.

Too, it has seven cuts (both released and unreleased) by the Ashes, the group from which the Peanut Butter Conspiracy evolved, though most of this material was done in the early days of the era in which they were going under the Peanut Butter Conspiracy billing. Because a lot of this was done in the group's formative days, much of it's a little (and sometimes a lot) more folk-rock-oriented than the more psychedelic output on their Columbia albums. That's particularly true of the sides done by the Ashes, with Spencer Dryden (just before his Jefferson Airplane days) on drums. Like the Peanut Butter Conspiracy's more widely known work, however, the music here is a second-division (though not downright second-rate) and sometimes derivative mixture of folk-rock, psychedelia, and California pop/rock, though often a bit rawer than their more familiar stuff. There are some nice tunes here, like the 1966 Ashes single "Is There Anything I Can Do," a lost folk-rock gem co-written by Jackie DeShannon; "Dark On You Now," another moody Ashes folk-rocker that the band would remake on the first Peanut Butter Conspiracy album; and "Free," which like some of their other more bittersweet tunes is a little reminiscent of the very early Jefferson Airplane with a heavier pop flavor. The 20-page booklet has Alec Palao's usual ace detective work on filling in the obscure history of the band, with lots of quotes from interviews with some of the members.

Los Angeles psychedelic band the Peanut Butter Conspiracy emerged in 1966 from the remains of the Ashes, formed the previous year by singer Pat Taylor, guitarist John Merrill, bassist Alan Brackett and drummer Spencer Dryden (who soon left the group to replace Skip Spence in the Jefferson Airplane).

Adding drummer Jim Voigt as Dryden's replacement, the Ashes recorded a self-titled LP for the Vault label before disbanding, with Merrill, Brackett and Voight recruiting singer Sandi Robison and harpist/guitarist Lance Fent to form the Peanut Butter Conspiracy; after debuting on Vault with the single "Time Is After You," the band signed to major label Columbia, where 1967's "It's a Happening Thing" heralded the spring release of their debut LP, the Gary Usher-produced The Peanut Butter Conspiracy Is Speading. Ex-Sound Machine guitarist Bill Woolf replaced Fent for the follow-up, The Great Conspiracy, which like its predecessor failed to make much of a commercial impact; only Robison, Merrill and Brackett remained for 1969's For Children of All Ages, which featured new keyboardist Ralph Shuckett and drummer Michael Stevens. The Peanut Butter Conspiracy disbanded soon after, with Brackett pursuing studio work, Fent later collaborating with Randy Meisner, and Woolf joining Fusion.

Emitt Rhodes - Listen, Listen

Though Rhodes' '60s band the Merry-Go-Round is a better place to start, with either the 1967 A&M LP The Merry-Go-Round or their posthumous best-of on Rhino, this 21-song overview begins with five tracks from that period and, more interestingly, documents his surprisingly, equally credible 1970-1973 solo work, not far removed from his earlier incarnation. Rhodes' sweet style aims for that place between the Byrds' folksy Rickenbackers and McCartney's thoughtful mid-period Beatles pop. Though the Merry-Go-Round never charted higher than number 63 with the opening track here, "Live" (which was covered by the Bangles on their first LP when they still had some guts to their sound), Rhodes carried on with this mellifluous, better-than-bubblegum, dense, melodic power pop, right through the Badfinger/Big Star era, on the underappreciated Dunhill LPs represented here: Emitt Rhodes, The American Dream, Mirror, and Farewell to Paradise. This is lovely, crafted, humble stuff -- the title of "She Laughed Loud" is the answer to the singer's request for a date! -- and softly connects.

1. Emitt Rhodes - Live [The Merry-Go-Round] (2:33)
2. Emitt Rhodes - Time Will Show the Wiser [Single Version] (2:30)
3. Emitt Rhodes - You're a Very Lovely Woman [The Merry-Go-Round] (2:53)
4. Emitt Rhodes - She Laughed Loud [The Merry-Go-Round] (2:44)
5. Emitt Rhodes - Listen, Listen [The Merry-Go-Round] (2:37)
6. Emitt Rhodes - 'Til the Day After (2:38)
7. Emitt Rhodes - Fresh as a Daisy (2:49)
8. Emitt Rhodes - You Take the Dark Out of the Night (2:55)
9. Emitt Rhodes - She's Such a Beauty (2:23)
10. Emitt Rhodes - Live Till You Die (2:47)
11. Emitt Rhodes - Long Time No See (3:16)
12. Emitt Rhodes - You Should Be Ashamed (2:40)
13. Emitt Rhodes - With My Face on the Floor (3:08)
14. Emitt Rhodes - Love Will Stone You (3:23)
15. Emitt Rhodes - Really Wanted You (2:43)
16. Emitt Rhodes - Birthday Lady (2:49)
17. Emitt Rhodes - Golden Child of God (2:44)
18. Emitt Rhodes - Warm Self Sacrifice (3:07)

V.A. -- Sing Me a Rainbow / A Trident Anthology (1965-1967) 2CD

In the mid-'60s, Trident Productions, run by Kingston Trio manager Frank Werber, recorded quite a bit of San Francisco Bay Area rock, usually but not always leaning to the folk-rock side. Though they had a big hit right away with the We Five's 1965 smash "You Were on My Mind," that single (and, to a lesser extent, the We Five group) represented the only real success Trident managed, despite distribution for some of their recordings through A&M and Verve. Sing Me a Rainbow is a two-CD set of tracks cut by Trident from 1965 to 1967, the great majority of them previously unreleased.

Those tracks that were released will be familiar to the San Francisco '60s rock fan, including "You Were on My Mind" and a few other We Five singles, as well as Blackburn & Snow's neglected folk-rock classic "Stranger in a Strange Land" and the Mystery Trend's garage-psychedelic 45 "Johnny Was a Good Boy." Otherwise, though, this is virgin territory for all but the most insider San Francisco '60s rock collectors, even if some of the artists (particularly the Sons of Champlin and John Stewart) went on to release reasonably high-profile records.

While it would be unrealistic to expect most of this to measure up to the better San Francisco rock of the early psychedelic scene, it does contain its share of cuts worth hearing, as well as generally contributing to a wider picture of the Bay Area scene at the time than is available through commonly available discs. Certainly not many people have heard the four We Five singles here other than "You Were on My Mind," which generally present a more straightforward and gutsier folk-rock combo than their LP tracks did. John Stewart and Randy Steirling's "Leave Me Alone" is a surprisingly early (August 1965) and brooding venture by then-Kingston Trio member Stewart into folk-rock; the Front Line's "Got Love" (later re-recorded for an official 45 outside Trident) is superb spiky garage rock; and the New Tweedy Brothers, known to San Francisco psychedelia aficionados for their rare 1968 LP, offer strong folk-rock on "Time," a song later re-recorded for that album. While much of the rest is rather average period folk-rock (though some British Invasion-influenced garage pop is present too), sometimes with a soft pop bent, even much of this is invested with some of the bittersweet yet uplifting spirit particular to San Francisco rock of the time and place. Ace/Big Beat also deserve credit for giving dedicated collectors of the style something different from the few familiar names, including a few alternates, demos, and backing tracks of recordings from Blackburn & Snow (the best of Trident's acts, the We Five included), the Sons of Champlin (in a much poppier style than their later, more psychedelic incarnation), and the Mystery Trend. Compiler and annotator Alec Palao also deserves much credit for rescuing this quite extensive archive of a nearly forgotten, but vital, corner of early San Francisco rock history for commercial release.

FUNKY JUNCTION 'TRIBUTE TO DEEP PURPLE

Play A Tribute To Deep Purple (1973)
Thin Lizzy, As Funky Junction, Pays Some Bills

Back in 1972, before fame would find them, Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott, Eric Bell and Brian Downey (then a power trio), were hired by a German businessman named Leo Muller to record an LP of cover songs by Deep Purple. Being broke, despite a couple of albums under their belt, they agreed – going by the name Funky Junction to cover their tracks. The LP, recorded in a single day and released on the Stereo Gold Award label, featured five Deep Purple songs, along with a few tracks written by (or, at least, credited to) Leo Muller and a couple of retitled cover songs (“Danny Boy” and “House Of The Rising Sun,” both mis-credited to Muller). As should be obvious, this project was little more than a business venture, to create a bargain bin album solely to capitalize on Deep Purple’s growing popularity. The band included Lynott (bass, vocals), Bell (guitar) and Downey (drums), along with future Blodwyn Pig keyboardist, Dave Lennox and vocalist Benny White – both of the Dublin band, Elmer Fudd. For many years, Lynott & Lizzy’s involvement went undetected, but in 2012 the tapes were re-released with a revised cover that outed the participants. Initially this music was issued as Funky Junction Play A Tribute To Deep Purple (1973) but a new band name was christened for the German pressing of The Rock Machine Play The Best Of Deep Purple And Other Hits. The photo on the cover belonged to Hard Stuff, a totally different band altogether. Hear a couple of tracks below from this Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy oddity, though… both Lizzy and Purple fans are bound to find themselves simply scratching their heads. Check out the unbelievably embarrassing solo on “Fireball.” The track listing here reflects the original LP release, which was slightly altered for the CD reissue 40 years later.

Fireball (3:27)
Dan (2:33)
Black Night (3:34)
Palamatoon (3:28)
Strange Kind Of Woman (3:34)
Hush (4:13)
Rising Sun (3:32)
Speed King (5:25)
Corina (4:30)

The Jones - Music To Watch Girls Dance (1967)

Carioca group of instrumental rock, composed by George Klein Romeiro da Silva (lead guitar), Edson Klein Romeiro da Silva, brother of the first (rhythm guitar), Newton dos Santos de Oliveira (bass) and Oswaldo Magellan Sands (drums). The ensemble recorded a compact and four long-plays. On the occasion of the third disc was included organist Carlos Alberto Rinaldi da Silva and the drummer was replaced by Lauro de Oliveira Silva Júnior. The group performed at dances, concerts and TV shows. Their executions were of good technique and its long-play \"Feature 14 greatest hits\" had good sales among the people of the musical genre. *******
Formed in 1962, a Glasgow R'n'B band managed by Joe Gaffney, they were sometimes referred to as The Scottish Beatles in their early days, although when they signed to Decca in 1965, they moved down to London. In their early days their live repertoire was drawn from originals, black America and less well known Rolling Stones cuts. They had a mod image and built up a very loyal audience around Glasgow before moving South.
1967 saw a label change to CBS and a new line-up. In their later days they were managed by Kenneth Pitt who also looked after David Bowie's affairs. At Pitt's suggestion they recorded some of Bowie's songs:- 'Silver Treetop School For Boys', 'Everything Is You' and 'When I'm Five'. They had a residency at London's legendary Marquee, appeared on TV show Ready, Steady, Go with the Who and once, during a lunchtime show in June 1965 in George Square, the teenage audience was whipped into such a frenzy a riot ensued, followed by accusations that it was somehow staged.
After attempting three songs, they had to leave the stage as mounted Police rescued some distressed fans from potential crushing injuries while the band escaped through the city chambers. The commotion was widely reported across the Scottish press.
Poor record company representation from Decca and the fact that huge record sales (50,000 in a month) went unrecorded outside of the only two shops in Scotland whose sales were counted, contributed to their demise. A planned live album from Glasgow never emerged either.
By 1969 the band were in terminal decline and when their van was stolen with all their equipment in it they packed it in. Eddie Campbell was later in Tear Gas and Jeff Allen went on to play for Dr. K's Blues Band and then East Of Eden (he also did a John Peel session with Blue). Lennox was a member of The Joe O'Donnell Band in 1978.
In the late 1960's and early 1970s Alan Mair ran a boutique in Kensington market selling hand made clothes and especially shoes & boots. Everybody bought them. Platforms, stacked heels, fancy patterns and colours. Freddie Mercury was a sales assistant until Queen started to break big. In the late '70's early '80s Alan played in the magnificent 'Only Ones' - of 'Another girl Another planet' fame etc.
The band released seven singles in their career.
'Everybody's Talking 'Bout My Baby' / 'Mr. Disappointed' (1965)'Left Right Left' / 'You'd Better Get A Better Hold On' (1966)'A Love Like Yours' / 'Base Line' (1966)'My One Chance To Make It' / 'Ain't Got No Soul (Left In These Old Shoes)' (1967)'Silver Treetop School For Boys' / Sugar Chocolate Machine' (1967)'Rain Coloured Roses' / 'Everything Is For You' (1967)'When I'm Five' / 'Little Boy' (1969)

In 2005 they released a 'Best-Of' CD and calls for live performances soon followed. They then reformed and played The Barrowland Ballroom Glasgow on December 23rd after more than thirty years! A DVD of the performance is now available.

The Merced Blue Notes - Get Your Kicks On Route 99

The Merced Blue Notes' career lasted about a decade and a half, but it resulted in few recordings, though apparently it did supply a whole lot of fun for live crowds in central California who wanted to groove to basic, energetic blues, R&B, soul, and rock & roll. That's what the band played on its handful of rare singles, on an assortment of labels, between 1961 and 1966. The group's music was in the stock R&B/blues-influenced rock & roll style, on both vocal and instrumental material, often putting organ and bluesy guitar to the fore, sometimes punctuated with sax and harmonica. In their later days they got into funkier grooves, in the manner that big acts such as Booker T. & the MG's were updating their sound, though they didn't possess the originality to gain a national audience.

The Merced Blue Notes formed in high school in Merced, CA, in January 1957, and would undergo numerous lineup changes over the course of their career, the constant element being singer/songwriter/guitarist Kenny Craig. They actually made their first contacts with the record industry back around 1958, when they auditioned for Specialty Records, with a young Sonny Bono in the control booth. Specialty only wanted to record their singer Roddy Jackson, however, Jackson making three flop 45s for the label in the late '50s. A couple of obscure singles came out on the Merced label in 1960, and they'd intermittently record over the next half dozen years for other companies, including Accent, Tri-Phi, Mammoth, and the Fantasy R&B subsidiary Galaxy. None of the singles caught on in a big way, though their 1961 Accent 45 "Rufus" got enough airplay in Detroit to get them some concert and recording work (the latter for Harvey Fuqua's Tri-Phi label) there in 1962.

With little success on record and a sound that was getting outdated by changing trends in rock and soul music, the lineup that recorded for Galaxy in the mid-'60s broke up in early 1966. Kenny Craig kept the group going with other musicians and continued playing live under the band name for several more years. The member of The Merced Blue Notes with the highest profile in subsequent years was Bobby Hunt, who recorded with the Seven Souls and also formed the trio Head West with fellow Seven Souls musicians Henry Moore and Bob Welch, playing keyboards with the group on several tours while Welch was in Fleetwood Mac in the early '70s.

With ten tracks from rare 1961-1966 singles, three cuts that only appeared on a compilation, and 13 previously unreleased recordings (one of them a previously unissued alternate take of their single "Bad, Bad Whiskey"), this is a more comprehensive anthology of this obscure group than anyone could have envisioned. As exhaustive as the archivism might be, it's fairly routine early-'60s-styled R&B-rock (even on the mid-'60s recordings), anchored by bluesy riffs and a small combo organ-grounded sound on both vocal and instrumental numbers. In some ways it's similar to the energetic (if oft-unimaginative) grinds churned out by numerous Northwest bands in the same era, though the Merced Blue Notes leaned perhaps a bit more to the more modern, funkier grooves being opened up by groups like Booker T. & the MG's. Were these guys funky? Sure -- they spin out tough bluesy guitar licks, penetrating organ, occasional blues harmonica, and (on the non-instrumentals) raw vocals. Did they have interesting material? Not so much -- the tunes were often elementary and derivative. They shine brightest when the organ gets most assertive and the singing lets loose in a fashion that many rock and soul labels would have toned down, as heard on the unissued fast shuffle "Greyhound" or the 1966 instrumental "Rufus," where the Booker T resemblance grows. Booker T. & the MG's, however, to take one point of reference, had far better riffs and arrangements, and to be harsh it's not too much of a surprise that these cats didn't break out of their region, as much entertainment as they must have provided at local shows and dances.

Velvet Night - Velvet Night (1970)

Velvet Night's sole album is very much an unintentional portrait of its era -- so classically on the cusp of late-'60s into '70s hard psych/heavy metal that it almost seems like it couldn't exist any other time. From the choice of covers that appear throughout (including a four-song Cream medley that ranges from the fair to the somewhat goofy) to the purple/false color scheme on the sleeve, everything about the album is of a glowering piece in many respects. The sextet's work isn't a lost classic by any means, but neither is the recorded evidence a tedious washout -- if only scholars of the time will really want to hear this in the end, there have been far worse albums rescued from obscurity. Lead singer Lynn Boccumini's vocal work, if obviously indebted to Grace Slick in part if not in whole, does provide a good calling card for the band, while her polite take on a more blues-leaning approach, evident in moments like the conclusion of their take on Donovan's "Season of the Witch." To their credit, the original numbers stand out more than the remakes, some of which were written by their producers Jimmy Curtiss and Steve Kanyon, such as the title (and thus bandname) song, which starts with a swirl of keyboard and guitar chaos before settling into an attractive but still slightly off chug. But the version of the Band's "The Weight" -- especially whichever male member is trying to do the lead vocals -- is definitely a step too far. [The CD was also released with a bonus track.]

Clothilde - Queen of the French Swinging Mademoiselle 1967

Clothilde, Queen of the S.M. (Swingin’ Mademoiselles)… Why Clothilde? Why not that more star-worthy, international acclaimed Françoise Hardy, or the more akin to the sub-genre, France Gall? Because she’s the most characteristic, archtypical French mademoiselle, that’s why! Christine Pilzer, even Jacqueline Taïeb before her, both may’ve been rediscovered first in this style unique to French Sixties Pop, and Stella also may’ve been the most out and out “anti-Yeye” with her slightly anti-establishment and derisive lyrics countering the Pop system and establishment but, Cleo’s all about text, not that much as a whole production. As such, we feel Clothilde takes the crown. Not only has Clothilde the most natural (albeit unknowingly) disposition as a chanteuse, singing such subversive lyrics with as much second degree and detachment but, the music itself is highly original : inventive arrangemen including French horn, musical saw, church bells, barrel organ, marimba, brass fiddle, woodwinds and busy fuzz guitar amidst all that slapstick comedy-like audio bric-à-brac.. Almost avant-garde in concept, it was imagined and produced by Clothilde’s impresario, manager and indeed creator, legendary Disques Vogue A.D. Germinal Tenas.  … This could’ve only come out of France!

Clothilde - Queen Of The French Swinging Mademoiselle 1967 - Import - After whetting our whistles with recent reissues by Francoise Hardy and the newest volume of the Swingin' Mademoiselles compilation (you grab that? HOT DAMN), this compilation of sides by Ye-Ye chanteuse Clothilde, compiled by our mainline to the French underground - Born Bad Records! Ecouté!:

"Comes with a four-page insert. Clothilde, queen of the ""Swingin' Mademoiselles."" Why Clothilde? Why not that more star-worthy, internationally-acclaimed Françoise Hardy, or the more akin to the sub-genre, France Gall? Because she's the most characteristic, archtypical French mademoiselle, that's why! Christine Pilzer, even Jacqueline Taïeb before her, both may have been rediscovered first in this style unique to French '60s pop, and Stella also may have been the most out and out ""anti-ye-ye"" with her slightly anti-establishment and derisive lyrics countering the pop system and establishment, but Cleo's all about text, not that much as a whole production. As such, Clothilde takes the crown. Not only has Clothilde the most natural (albeit unknowingly) disposition as a chanteuse, singing such subversive lyrics with as much second degree detachment as possible but also, the music itself is highly original: inventive arrangements including French horn, musical saw, church bells, barrel organ, marimba, brass fiddle, woodwinds, and busy fuzz guitar amidst all that slapstick comedy-like audio bric-à-brac. "

First off - if you dig Ye-Ye in any capacity, you're bound to love this, BUT just as the icing on the cake, let us testify to the greatness in these grooves! Clothilde operates within the general framework of all the Ye-Ye princesses, but the beauty of these tracks is the KILLER arrangements by famed producer Germinal Tenas that weave in downright weird sounds like fuzz guitar, sitar, harpsichord and french horn in such an interesting way that we were hooked from track #1! Clothilde's got one-up on her contemporaries - this stuff frickin' ROCKS with raging guitars and HEAVY pounding drums (not unlike a Dutronc tune) and we feel like that alone will keep us coming back again and again!

VA - Swinging Mademoiselle Vol.1-3

 Swinging Mademoiselle Volume 1

This 16-song compilation of rare, '60s French pop sung by female vocalists is very similar to the three-volume Ultra Chicks CD series devoted to the same micro-genre. In fact, most of the singers on this LP are also represented on the Ultra Chicks volumes, although only three of the tracks are duplicated from Ultra Chicks. And like Ultra Chicks, this might disappoint those looking for something of the caliber of Françoise Hardy. But it has fun, if on the whole light, pop/rock tunes that derive pretty heavily from British Invasion, mod, girl group, and early psychedelic styles, but with French femme vocals. Some of the better tracks are Elsa Leroy's French cover of the Beau Brummels' "Just a Little"; Françoise's (who is not Françoise Hardy) breathy rendition of "Love Is Strange," retitled "Hum! Hum!"; and Cleo's pensively melodic "Madame La Terre." Comes with lots of photos and detailed liner notes, which you don't get with all of these kinds of comps (like the Ultra Chicks ones, for instance).

В Штатах-Боб Дилан,в Британии-Донован,а во Франции-Antoine(Настоящее имя Pierre-Antoine Muracioli).
