Puff - Puff (New
Edition) 1969
Although I'm an avid collector of late sixties pyschedelic & pop-psych bands, I was completely unaware of Puff until recently. The record was produced by the legendary, and much over-looked, Alan Lorber. In fact, this CD release (the LP was on MGM) comes from Iris Music which, from what I gather, is run by Lorber's heirs or close associates. I recommend checking out the Iris Music group's website. There I found a few surprises and they were always kind enough to answer my questions. So, as for the music on Puff, it has the crisp production which was the trademark of Lorber and the Bosstown Sound circa 1969. The band's songwriting and vocal work are the attraction here. The sound falls somewhere between the first and third Ultimate Spinach records. The vocals, with their clever arrangements, are up front. The band consists primarily of the standard guitar, bass, drums & organ line up. Alan Lorber's production places every sound perfectly in the mix with a few FX treats peppered here and there. The record is a fun ride and while it doesn't quite deserve the moniker of "lost classic", it should be in the collection of anyone who enjoys the pop-psych music of the late sixties and bands like Ultimate Spinach, Chamaeleon Church, Chrysalis, etc.
