History of Radio Veronica

It is said that on 15 October 1959 it was decided to start radio broadcasts from a ship on the North Sea, following the example of Radio Mercur in Denmark. The station started working under the name Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland, abbreviated VRON, but there was a great deal of confusion with the VERON and so the name Veronica was derived from it, which also referred to the poem Het schaap Veronica by Annie M.G. Schmidt. [1] The ship anchored just outside the territorial waters off Scheveningen, initially under Panamanian flag, later under the Guatemalan flag. On April 18, 1960, a first test broadcast took place and it is sometimes seen as a birthday date. Radio Veronica went to the familiar wavelength of 192 meters on May 17, 1960 from the former lightship Borkum Riff, which was converted into a radio ship in the port of Emden, Germany, at 192 meters or 1562 kHz. In November 1964 the Borkum Riff was replaced by the Icelandic trawler Norderney. 

Radio Veronica became hugely popular with young people, because it broadcast popular and pop music in a fixed program schedule from 1969 onwards. From January 2, 1965, a weekly hit parade of the most popular songs, the Dutch hit parade, soon called the Veronica Top 40, was broadcast. At the time, pop music was hardly broadcast on the regular radio stations (Hilversum I and II). This formula was unique in the Netherlands. Also innovative for the Netherlands were the jingles, which allowed the listener to immediately recognize his favorite radio station (station calls) and disc jockey. A new phenomenon on land were the drive-in shows, where listeners could admire their favorite DJ while spinning records. These Veronica drive-in shows were very successful and were widely imitated by broadcasters, other stations and discotheques.
