Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers was a rock-'n-roll band from Arnhem. 

Biography

The Moans, named after a song by Art Blakey, was a musical extravaganza of a number of Arnhem Art Academy students in the mid-1960s. From the very beginning, the band had pianist Herman Brood in its ranks. After Brood continued his career with Cuby and the Blizzards, The Moans continued for a while as Moan and as Moan Nightmare. In 1972, Moan, as a joke, culminated in Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers. 

During performances, Moan played progressive pop music before the break and then, dressed as rockers, returned for rock-'n-roll covers under the name Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers. Frontman became Arnie Treffers (Long Tall Ernie), lead guitarist Alfons Haket (alias Alfie Muscles), bassist Henk Bruijsten (Hank the Knife) and -a short time later- drummer Alan Macfarlane (Tenderfoot Macfarlane). Shortly afterwards Jan Rietman, called Jumping Johnny by The Shakers, was added as pianist. In an episode of the VPRO TV program Het Gat van Nederland in 1972, the joke was visually documented by director Theo Uittenbogaard with recordings of the Shakers in the notorious Spijkerkwartier in Arnhem, with speeding cars and motorcycles, fights and physical assaults and concluded with a steaming performance in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. 

In 1973, things were tackled differently. Under the leadership of manager Rein Muntinga, Moan disappeared from the supporting program and with a publicity campaign the Shakers became known as a rough rock 'n' roll band. Rumors about aggressive band members and fights together with wild performances did their work. They scored successes with singles such as Big Fat Mama, Get Yourself Together and Allright. In Germany, television appearances and concerts followed. 

From 1974, Bruijsten went his own way as Hank the Knife & the Jets and singer Treffers made a solo album. Rietman left the same year, Haket the year after and Macfarlane left in 1978, after their biggest hit, Do you remember (produced by Jaap Eggermont). This song became the hit of the year in the National Hit Parade in 1977. In that year, the rock 'n' roll act was abolished. Of the new generation of musicians, guitarist Jos Jaspers and drummer Eugene Arts started a new band under the name Turbo. In 1980, the group released a single in Germany under the name The Block, due to contractual complications with Polydor. 

In 1982, the curtain fell for the Shakers. Rietman continued as pianist of the Los Vast orchestra and presenter of the NCRV program Los Vast. Bruijsten, Haket and Macfarlane met again later in Hank the Knife and the Jets. 

In 1995 Treffers died at the age of 48 from lung cancer.
