I'd never seen the movie "Bye Bye Birdie," so without going into detail, I assumed James Darren's album "Bye Bye Birdie" was the film's soundtrack... But it turned out to be much more interesting. I recently received the album "Bye Bye Birdie (Original Soundtrack Recording) 1963 RCA Victor," and everything fell into place...

Originally titled Let's Go Steady, Bye Bye Birdie is set in 1958. The play's book was influenced by Elvis Presley being drafted into the US Army in 1957. The rock star character's name, "Conrad Birdie", is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty later had a long career as a country music star, but, in the late 1950s, he was one of Presley's rock 'n' roll rivals.

The original 1960–1961 Broadway production was a Tony Award–winning success. It spawned a London production and several major revivals, a sequel, a 1963 film, and a 1995 television production.

Bye Bye Birdie is a 1963 American musical romantic comedy film directed by George Sidney from a screenplay by Irving Brecher, based on Michael Stewart's book of the 1960 musical of the same name. It also features songs by composer Charles Strouse and lyricist Lee Adams, and a score by Johnny Green. Produced by Fred Kohlmar, the film stars Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Ann-Margret, Maureen Stapleton, Bobby Rydell, Jesse Pearson, and Ed Sullivan. Van Dyke and featured player Paul Lynde reprised their roles from the original Broadway production.

The film was Van Dyke's feature film debut and helped make Ann-Margret a superstar during the mid-1960s. Her performance earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress and her next role was with Presley in Viva Las Vegas.

Colpix Records

A 1963 compilation album of songs from the "Bye Bye Birdie" movie soundtrack performed by James Darren, The Marcels, Shelley Fabares, and Paul Petersen. Although Columbia Pictures released the popular 1963 movie starring Dick Van Dyke and Ann-Margret, the rights to the movie's lucrative soundtrack album went to RCA, and not to the studio's in-house record label, Colpix. Not to be outdone, Colpix commissioned house producer Stu Phillips to create a knock-off album featuring songs from the movie performed by teen heart throbs Darren, Fabares, Petersen and The Marcels, all of whom were then under contract to Colpix.
