Equipe 84 - Io ho in mente te (1966) ITALIA

Mp3\62Mb
*****
1964-69
Maurizio Vandelli (vocals, guitar)
Franco Ceccarelli (guitar, vocals)
Victor Sogliani (bass, vocals)
Alfio Cantarella (drums, vocals)
Probably the most famous Italian beat group from the 60's, and with a long career starting with a debut single in 1964, Equipe 84 lasted until mid 70's and also had a (slightly) prog influenced period. This four piece from Modena was for the Italian teenagers the local answer to the Beatles, and they had a long series of hit singles between 1966 and 1969 with such classics as Io ho in mente te, Auschwitz, Bang bang, 29 settembre (that also had an English sung release in USA and UK), Un angelo blu, Tutta mia la cittа.
The band had its first crisis in 1970 with original member Franco Ceccarelli leaving the group and drummer Alfio Cantarella arrested for drug possession, being replaced for a short time and a single by ex-Rokes drummer Mike Shepstone; later, with the help of another guest drummer, Franz Di Cioccio (from I Quelli, then Premiata Forneria Marconi), they released what is usually considered their most progressive album, Id.
This, their fourth album, was less song-based than their previous works, and contained ten tracks with dynamic arrangements and some orchestral passages. Not a real prog album, this has some good tracks like Il re dei re and the long Un brutto sogno, but for many Italian listeners the characteristic voice of Maurizio Vandelli is too tied to their beat period for this to be convincently considered a prog album.
With Casa mia, in 1971, Equipe 84 returned to a typical song album, but their most creative time had clearly passed. Dr.Jekyll & Mr.Hyde, from 1973 marks their passage to Ariston, and is another pop album, with the single exception of the jazzy instrumental Dr.Jekyll. Last album, Sacrificio in 1974 has again some good instrumental passages, even if the basic influence is still melodic pop. They were helped here by drummer Paolo Siani from Nuova Idea. The group kept playing and recording until 1977, a late concert is included in the live CD released in mid 90's.
After the end of Equipe 84 singer and leader Maurizio Vandelli has tried to reform them many times until the sad death in the 90's of bassist Sogliani; he's also released a couple of solo albums in 1970 and 1974 and also worked as producer for the likes of Reale Accademia di Musica and Gianni D'Errico. - Eddie Eckstein: vocals, drums
- Paul Ditchfield: vocals, keyboards, guitars, bass
- Barry Jarman: guitar, trumpet, bass
- Jimmy Dunning: guitar

Dubbed South Africa's answer to the Beatles, the pop group The Bats was formed in October 1964 and consisted of group members Eddie Eckstein (drums/vocals), Barry Jarman (guitar/trumpet/concertina), Jimmy Dunning (guitar) and Paul Ditchfield (keyboard/guitar/bass/vocals). Paul, Barry and Eddie knew each other well and had wanted to form a group for a long time, but had been prevented from doing so by their respective contracts with various bands. Barry suggested they form a beat trio with the express purpose of making records. Jimmy Dunning, who had played with them before, was unanimously nominated to fill the gap of lead guitarist. After finally getting together, they arranged an audition with Matt Mann, then A & R Manager at G.R.C. (and later owner of RPM Record Company), who signed them to the CBS label and produced their first single, All I Got. The group were quibbling with each other about an appropriate name. In an attempt to restore order, Matt Mann yelled "You're All Bats!" and so "The Bats" was born... Read more...

JANCY and his NEWS
The Searchers

Founded in 1957 by John McNally (guitar/vocals), the Searchers were originally one of thousands of skiffle groups formed in the wake of Lonnie Donegan's success with "Rock Island Line." The Searchers' immediate competitors included bands such as the Wreckers and the Confederates, both led by Michael Pender (guitar, vocals), and the Martinis, led by Tony Jackson (guitar/vocals). By 1959, McNally and Pender were working together as a duet; later in the year, Jackson joined as the lead vocalist. After drummer Norman McGarry left the Searchers he was replaced by Chris Crummy, who quickly renamed himself ... Read More...

In 63 the Searchers played 128 times on the Starclub stage, long hard nights in Hamburg/Germany. There were plans to make a live recording with various artists at the Starclub and Chris Curtis really begged to get one song - at least. There was one week time for recording using very primitive stuff. So only mono recordings were possible most of them made in the afternoon, when the Starclub was closed. The applause was copied later easily to be heard on the Searchers LP. The original album was released in October 1963 on the Philips label no. P 48052 L

Of all the British bands that recorded at the Star Club in 1962/63, the Searchers gave the best performance — polished, exciting, and utterly professional, lacking the finely honed 12-string guitar sound that their subsequent hits would display but still a fine testament to their early work and history....

In 2002 was be released CD. This CD is an update of an LP from Mercury released about 1964
Founded in the late '50s to back the now forgotten Johnny Sandon, this Liverpool foursome first played the Star-Club in July 1962, and made their 19 Philips recordings on March 1, 1963. Soon after they signed with Pye in England and went on to score many pop and folk-rock hits. This, though, is the raw side of the Searchers. Hard, pounding beat music. Here are all early classics like 'Sweets for my Sweet', 'Ain't That Just Like Me', 'Sweet Nothin's', 'Beautiful Dreamer' and many others. 2002.

The LP was issued with a weak lead guitar volume level; unfortunately this has not been changed on the CD. One would assume it was on the master. But the music is great. Many bands rush through songs when playing live, but the Searchers have great live arrangements played with perfect pace. These are the Tony Jackson (bass) Searchers before their sound was sedated in the studio, so there are no sweet, gentle moments. I like this lineup which produced their first two U.S. studio albums including material like Some Other Guy, Sea of Heartbreak, and Saturday Night Out. Each British invasion group had its own favorite American influences; you will hear the C&W and R&B favored by the Searchers as well as the Buddy Holly favorites plus Stephen Foster's Beautiful Dreamer. Brenda Lee's Sweet Nothings has a clever vocal arrangement. Play it often; it sounds better each time.

Great and rare stuff

One of the most distinctive instrumental groups of the '50s and '60s, Johnny & the Hurricanes produced the Top Ten hit "Red River Rock" and scored several other instrumental hits that mixed rock & roll with traditional melodies. Originally known as the Orbits, the group formed in Toledo, OH, in 1958 and was led by saxophonist Johnny Paris; other members included organist Paul Tesluk, guitarist Dave Yorko, bassist Lionel "Butch" Mattice, and drummer Tony Kaye. After a stint recording with rockabilly singer Mack Vickery, the group traveled to Detroit, hoping to become a backing band for up-and-coming singers. However, a pair of music promoters, Harry Balk and ... Read More...

NEWS BY JANCY !!!

One of the most successful, and certainly one of the most prolific, German rock groups of the '60s, the Rattles enjoyed reasonable success in their native land without making much of an impression elsewhere (though some of their material was released in other countries). Starting out in the same Star Club-based Hamburg scene as the Liverpool groups of the early '60s, their early repertoire was built upon a similar base of '50s rock and soul/R&B. They released about 30 singles during the '60s (some on the Star-Club label itself), as well as almost ten albums, eventually making the transition to original material, and marching on well into the 1970s.

Johnny Vallons & The Deejays was a British r'n'b group whose history got started already in the late 1950s. However, after a few years' activity, they haven't got basically anywhere in the UK. The Deejays' recording career began not until in 1963, and that happened as far as in Sweden, as a result of band interchange, which was practiced between England and the Scandinavian countries. The man who made this trade possible was Swe-Disc record company's Roland Ferneborg, whose group the Spotnicks had just finished a tour in England. Besides a bunch of gigs, the Deejays also signed with Swe-Disc, and recorded there five 45s and an album between 1963-1965.The Sweden trip was planned to last just a couple of months, but it actually took over a year. Johnny Vallons had a wife waiting at home, so it was unavoidable that sooner or later he had to come back in England. After Vallons had left the group, also the other members returned but just to find themselves a new vocalist, who was to be John Murray, who used to sing with Erle Morgan's father's dance-orchestra. In 1965, the re-formulated Deejays landed again to Sweden, and the new record deal with Polydor gave them immediately a hit "Long Tall Shorty". They also did a cover of Don & Dewey's "Farmer John", but it got beaten up by the earlier version of the Hep Stars, which broke the Swedish charts big time (in Finland, "Farmer John" was better known by the frantic interpretation of Andy Einiö & the Islanders). During 1965-1968, altogether 21 singles and 2 albums were released in Sweden, and excepting two 45s made in London ("Coming On Strong" and "Surrender"), all of them were also recorded there. 6 of their songs went to the Swedish Top 10.In 1966 the Deejays got their biggest commercial success "Dum Dum", which was undoubtedly to changing their style from traditional r'n'b towards to pop music. During the time in Sweden, both Erle Morgan and John Murray had got married, and Murray's wife, who was British, longed back to England. In 1967 Murray left the group, and he was replaced by Swedish Clive Sands (Sarstedt). Also Erle Morgan and his Swedish wife had difficulties in being a musician and a husband at the same time, so he decided to quit as well (although he stayed in Sweden, and continued later playing with Jörgen Edman and the Beatmakers). After the central members had resigned, the Deejays eventually broke up in 1968.( http://koti.mbnet.fi/wdd/deejays.htm )

Lineup:
Brian Bennett (vocals and keyboards),
Mike Douglas (vocals and guitars),
Malcolm Lenny (vocals and lead guitar),
Gary Unwin (bass), and Mel Wright (drums).

The HiFis were a wonderful mid 60s London-based group that would eventually relocate to Germany and release the above Star-Club lp in 1967. Prior to the LPs release, the HiFis (also known as the Hi-Fi’s) also released a series of singles. These singles were more in a soul beat style though some of them are pretty good and worth seeking out. Their lineup consisted of Brian Bennett (vocals and keyboards), Mike Douglas (vocals and guitars), Malcolm Lenny (vocals and lead guitar), Gary Unwin (bass), and Mel Wright (drums).
Many UK groups would relocate to countries such as Germany or Italy because being a British Invasion group that played original rock n roll was seen as something special abroad. Many of these groups like the Rokes, the Primitives, and the Sorrows (a really excellent group) would see great success and sell lots of records. The HiFis did pretty well in Germany and were a popular live group. This success allowed them to record their only album, Snakes and HiFis. I have seen other magazines describe the lp as “a brilliant mixed bag of an lp” or “one of the finest examples of the beat-bands-go-bonkers syndrome.” I have even heard some compare the HiFi’s guitar and rhythm section to that of the legendary Monks (a funhouse effect in which everything seems about ready to fall apart but the band pulls thru in the end to keep things together). I agree with all these comparisons though it’s really hard to put a label on the HiFis, they were pretty unique.
There are several great tracks on Snakes and HiFis: Tread Softly For The Sleepers (a great chunky mod psych track that reminds me of late period Action), Snakes and Ladders, What’s A Bulb, I’m A Box, Calorie Ann (soaring vocals and whacked out lyrical concerns), Odd Man Out, You’re Haunting Me, My Cards Numbered 17, and the awesome but strange Uwe Aus Duisburg. Just by looking at these titles one can tell that this music is NOT the typical beat psych fare. As mentioned before, this lp was recorded at a time when beat groups were experimenting with different sounds and turning to psychedelia, so there’s a bit of an advanced mid-60s sound - short 2 minute pop songs with a freaky edge. For those of you who love the Kinks, the Idle Race, the Move, the Tages and the Ro-d-y’s (a great group from the Netherlands), you’ll love this reissue (the 2008 Wooden Hill cd version to be exact). Standout picks on my end are the buzzing organ psych of What’s a Bulb, which is an absolutely brilliant track, and Uwe Aus Duisburg. The latter track vaguely reminds me of The Move with its galloping tempo and gonzoid lyrics - it’s a track that would fit in well with today’s modern indie radio stations. Other good ones are the Pet Sounds influenced You’re Haunting Me and the truly bizarre I’m A Box. Both of these tracks carry a unique mellow buzz and one may also note that I’m A Box was strangely released as a single (this track had no hit potential whatsoever). Wooden Hill reissues are usually limited, so pick one up if you can. Snakes and HiFis is definitely an obscure gem and a must hear for fans of Brit psych.

V.A. - The Best Of The Beat Groups Of Sofia (1969) Bulgaria

It seems that there were not many beat groups in Sofia around in 1969. This compilation collects only the songs of "Sreburnite Grivni" and "Shtoursite" plus one song from a band called "Glassovete". The style of the two main bands ranges from beat/psychedelic/freakbeat and some bulgarian folk influences. Pretty strange stuff but some songs could find easily their way on a "Worldbeaters" compilation. The climax is the cool freakbeat number "Song For The Crickets" by "Shtoursite".

compiling two dozen early tracks, the collection paints a cohesive portrait of the guitarist at the outset of his career. Los Vidrios Quebrados - Fictions(1967) Chile

Mp3\40Mb
*******
A highly-rated beat / R'n'B / folk-rock outfit from Chile. Originally known as Los Cuervos (The Crows), three quarters of the band met whilst studying law at the Catholic University in Santiago and discovered a common love of bands such as The Beatles, Kinks, Yardbirds and The Byrds. At their first gig as Los Vidrios Quebrados in 1965, at the University, they played just three songs, but these were sufficient to win them a record contract with Emilio Rojas' Odeon label. After the Friend and She'll Never Know I'm Blue single, in 1966, they recorded their sole album Fictions in 1967. This was recorded in two nights on only three channels and spans Byrds'-influenced chiming folk-rock, to Yardbirds-influenced R'n'B material. The original release came with a four-page lyric booklet which is now hard to find. All twelve tracks were originals and overall a very consistent standard was achieved - with the catchy title track the pick of the bunch. All their recordings were made with mostly home-made instruments and/or amplifiers, creating everything from scratch using furniture, record player cartridges for pick-ups, bottle-caps for tambourine parts and loud speakers - the only "bought" item being a Gretsch pick-up! Although the band never recorded any cover versions, they considered that rock 'n' roll could only be sung in English and refused to sing in their native language, arguing that a cueca (the Chilean national dance) could not be sung in English. Their baroque approach also helped introduce them to a wider audience, including classical radio, whilst at T.V. appearances, where they were required to lip-sync, Juan Enrique would on occassion play the drums with flowers whilst the band would sing phrases not in the audio mix. Locally, they were so successful that, in 1967, they went to Europe to attempt to make it big. However, they soon went their separate ways.(taken from "Time Machine")

Johnny Rivers - At The Whisky Á Go Go Here We Á Go Go Again!(1965)

Johnny Rivers is a unique figure in the history of rock music. On the most obvious level, he was a rock star of the 1960s and a true rarity as a white American singer/guitarist who made a name for himself as a straight-ahead rock & roller during the middle of that decade. Just as important behind the scenes, his recordings and their success led to the launching, directly and indirectly, of at least three record labels and a dozen other careers whose influence extended into the 1970s, 1980s, and beyond. Rivers was very much a kindred spirit to figures like Buddy Holly and Ronnie Hawkins, with all of the verve and spirit of members of that first wave of rock & rollers. He had the misfortune of having been born a little too late to catch that wave, however, and ... Read More...

Johnny Rivers' two 1965 albums have been released together in a double-disc package. Though neither Meanwhile Back at the Whisky A Go Go or Rockin' the Folk were commercial disappointments, they weren't the singer's most popular records, either. Rivers' first album was also recorded live at the Whisky, so Meanwhile represents something of a homecoming. Since Rivers is essentially an interpretive singer, a live album suits his talents well — it features a set list that isn't plagued by filler and a tight, energetic backing band. Because of this, Meanwhile is the better record of the pair. Rockin' the Folk has its moments, but many of these folk songs aren't as compelling as Rivers' rock and pop covers. It does have its moments — such as the minor hit "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" — but there are too many weak moments to make the record interesting for anyone but dedicated fans. Then again, only dedicated fans will have the need to purchase this double-disc set.

Reissue of one and only album by Canadian 60's legends. Psychedelic flowery pop-syk with good FUZZ guitars and Farfisa organ. Excellent songs and vocal harmonies.
The British North American Act were a 1960's psychedelic band based out of Montreal, Quebec. The group featured five members from various areas of the world -- Hungary, England and Canada. Their only album, 'In The Beginning' (1968), featured sunshine pop elements of The Association and The Turtles along with more roots oriented songs a la Buffalo Springfield.

The British North-American Act (not to be confused with the British North America Acts) were a garage band with a mildly psychedelic edge that operated out of Montreal during the late '60's. I couldn't really unearth anything about the band or its members, but the liner notes do at least provide us with a list of the group's lineup: "The BNA Act individually... Andy Bator, organ and piano, born in Hungary, February 20, 1947. Bob Allen, lead guitar, born in Montreal, July 3, 1946. Dave McCall, drums, born in Suffolk, England, November 11, 1948. Rick Elger, lead singer, rhythm guitar and harmonica, born in Liverpool, England. Kirk Armstrong, bass, born in Montreal, June 20, 1946. As a group... The British North-American Act works out of Montreal. The amount of time and effort spent is quite evident when you listen to IN THE BEGINNING. Everything they record is original. To date they have more than twenty songs written. Hold onto your seats, here comes the BRITISH NORTH-AMERICAN ACT! In The Beginning is a short but sweet set of songs heavily influenced by the usual suspects of the period. "See How Free" kicks the album off with a mix of harmonizing and twangy guitars somewhat reminicent of The Byrds. "Only A Dream," my favourite track on the record, is a melancholic ballad with a tuneful chorus, while "If You're Looking For Honey" is a more straightfoward blues-based tune with nice work by lead singer Rick Elger on the high "ooo"'s. Lastly, "All The World Is In Your Eyes" closes out the record with a dash of Kinks-inspired whimsy

The Children - Rebirth (1968)

Mp3\105Mb
*****
Great psych from Texas band who released only one classic album in 1968. Starting out as Stoics back in 66, they evolved into Mind's Eye. Including all their 45's as Stoics, Mind's Eye and Children, lp from 1968 plus more unreleased material as Children from 1969-1970. THE CHILDREN Rebirth (2002 Dutch 26-track compilation double LP set pressed on 180gm Virgin Vinyl & bringing together not only the entire of their 1968 LP, but also rare single tracks from predecessor bands 'The Stoics', 'The Argyles' & 'The Minds Eye' along with bonus tracks from 1968-1970 that were previously unreleased. Great gatefold picture sleeve with extensive sleeve notes & complete with the original inner sleeves GFE/LP-187).
The band that eventually became the Children began life as a pair of competing garage combos on the often-overlooked San Antonio rock circuit in 1965. The Stoics came together in the spring of that year. Guitarists William Ash and Rufus Quillian were upper-middle-class kids while singer Al Acosta, drummer Sam Allen, and bass player Michel Marech all came from the city's predominantly Hispanic northeast side. All, however, were united by a love of the Rolling Stones and the Kinks. The band released a single ("Hate") at the beginning of 1967, just before they split in two over a disagreement. It was not long before William Ash was invited to join ... Read More...

There's no solid information in the liner notes as to when the ten songs on this disc were originally released, although at least a couple of them, "Chicama Way" and "Tibet's Suzettes," are from their third album, Traffic Sound (1970). All of the material certainly does have a 1970 feel, and they sound like nothing so much as a good warm-up act for, say, Joe Cocker or Santana had they been able to tour in the Northern Hemisphere, with their soul-rock feel. Occasional bursts of jazzy flute indicate that they were probably fans of early Jethro Tull. Great typo in the liner notes: "In 1969 they recorded their second LP, Virgin, perhaps the finest rock album made in South America in the seventies."
&&&&&&
Recorded in 1970, known for it’s tri-fold pink cover, which is reproduced in this edition; features eight tracks of highly original material, full of “all out” improvised solos—some people call this their finest album. By this point, Traffic Sound had a strong, mature sound, unique in its mixture of psychedelic rock with Andean and Latin music. The hit songs ‘Chicama Way’ and ‘Tibet’s Suzettes’ (the album is often referred to under this name) revealed the group’s inner thoughts and the atmosphere that surrounded Peruvian youths in the early seventies. From the powerful rock of ‘Yesterday’s game’ and ‘What you need and what you want,’ to the soft psychedelia of ‘Those days have gone’ and ‘America,’ this album is a must for any psychedelic collection. The group were very active on an international level after this LP was released, and never quite were able to reach this quality again. Not only were they were playing at the Tiffany and Galaxy Clubs and at private parties, but they also went on a tour paid by Braniff Airlines. The South American tour, the first one by a Peruvian rock group, took them to Chile, Argentina and Brazil. They were welcomed everywhere as pioneers of the new rock sound that was under formation in South America. This reissue is the first and only one done using the original master tapes, was remastered with tube amplifiers, and was manufactured under license from MAG Records.

Mandy and The Girlfriends - Selftitled (????)

Mp3\77Mb

Pretty girls, nice music and One of the rarest german longplayer from label "Kerston"

from JANCY

******

The focus on the pop scene may have been Liverpool and London in the 1960s, but Hull spawned a girl group with an international following.

Hilary Morgan and Margaret Wedgner were two members of the 1960's group, Mandy and the Girlfriends who came into the Late Show to tell of their days touring and performing with the group from Hull. The line-up wasn't consistent throughout the group's life, but Margaret who was on bass and vocals and Hilary (the only non-singer in the group) who played drums, were at the group's core. Other members of the group were Karen Baker, Lynda Harrison, Lesley Saxil-Neilson and Merle Prior. 'Mandy' Smith was a vocalist who worked with a number of local groups.
As teenagers, the group came together with the full support of their parents and set out entertaining the crowds in clubs principally around the city of Hull but also they travelled further afield. They were chaperoned by a Mrs. Smith who looked after the girls, helping them in their endeavours. Margaret and Hilary talk with deep affection about the times they had, including playing with The Animals. Margaret in a project after the Girlfriends, also recalls playing at the same venue as The Who in Hull.
60s Female Group 352
The all-female line-up attracted a great deal of attention, none more so than when they toured US airbases in Germany in the mid-1960's. Going on the German tour was a big decision. The group gave up the chance of appearing on the TV show, Opportunity Knocks, which at the time had an audience of millions. They'd passed the audition stage in Hull but took the decision to work abroad. Hilary says that for her, playing in the band was all that mattered and loved the thrill of playing before a large crowd.
The attention they received from the US troops was rapturous. It was the time of the Vietnam war and a lot of troops passed through the three bases the girls toured. It was a gruelling schedule, they spent a year at the bases, interspersed with breaks which brought them back to Britain for a month's leave. Hilary had a 'souvenir' from the German tour, she became a GI bride.
During their German tour they recorded an album of songs, but had also recorded in this country notably with Keith Herd of the Fairview Studios. Margaret recalls recording 12 songs in a four hour period in a room with walls covered with egg boxes to help insulate the room and provide the correct acoustic. Songs were recorded in one session and not 'multi-tracked' where instruments are recorded separately and then mixed together to form one song.
Margaret and Hilary speak at length about the formation of the group, performing, recording, life in Germany and very importantly the clothes. They also lament the loss of the venues where live bands can play. They say that since the smoking ban in public places came into force they've noticed a big decline in audiences at events they've attended in recent times.

Keith - Ain't Gonna Lie (1966)

Mp3\50Mb

********

Remembered for his 1967 Top Ten smash "98.6," singer Keith was born James Barry Keefer in Philadelphia on May 7, 1949. According to legend, he earned his first record deal with Columbia after camping out on the doorstep of A&R executive Jerry Ross; the resulting single, 1966's "Caravan of Lonely Men," was credited to Keith and the Admirations. When Ross moved to Mercury Records he took Keith with him, and the singer soon cracked the Top 40 with his solo debut, "Ain't Gonna Lie; " "98.6" reached the number seven position in the first week of 1967, but except for one last Top 40 entry — "Tell Me to My Face" — he never again appeared on the U.S. charts. After his 1968 sophomore LP Out of Crank failed to create public interest, Keith signed to Frank Zappa's Discreet label to issue the single "In and Out of Love"; after one final album, 1969's RCA release The Adventures of Keith, he retired from performing, briefly attempting an unsuccessful comeback during the mid-1980s.

Farquahr - Farquahr (1970)

Mp3\50Mb
*****
Farquahr were mainstays on the Boston and New Haven folk scene in the 1960s and '70s; blending humor with music, they cut an album for Verve in 1968 as the Fabulous Farquahr, and shortened the name to Farquahr when they recorded their second (and last) album for Elektra in 1970. The group's deliberately silly stage names disguised the fact that three of the members of Farquahr were actually brothers -- Bobby McGowan (aka Hummingbird Farquahr), Dennis McGowan (aka Condor Farquahr) and Frank McGowan (aka Flamingo Farquahr), with Doug Lapham joining them as Barnswallow Farquahr -- and they also performed as a Celtic folk combo known as the McGowan Brothers. Unfortunately, Farquahr's comic side often gets lost in the shuffle on this album, though "Dear John Deere" and "Holy Moses" display a keen wit. With Jerry Ragovoy producing the set, the polished arrangements (often dotted with strings) are prime examples of early-'70s folk-rock (though "Dear John Deere" leans towards a ragtime flavor), with the quartet's harmonies and Lapham's songs clearly the main attraction here. While Farquahr's playful side is certainly visible, Lapham was an intelligent and perceptive lyricist when he had something to say, and the draft dodger's tale "Streets of Montreal" and the philosophical "My Island" are compelling stuff. Longtime fans looking for a reminder of Farquahr's days as the Clown Princes of New England Folk will have to wait for the Verve album to be reissued some day, but this set confirms that they were fine singers with a gifted songwriter in their ranks, and deserved wider recognition outside their home base.

Harper's Bizarre - Feelin' Groovy (1967)

MP3\60Mb
*****
The eclectic pop group Harper's Bizarre was formed in Santa Cruz, CA, in 1963 by Ted Templeman (born October 24, 1944; Santa Cruz, CA) (vocals, drums, trumpet), Dickie Scoppettone (born July 5, 1945; Santa Cruz, CA) (guitar, vocals), Eddie James (born Santa Cruz, CA) (guitar, vocals), and Dick Yount (b. January 9, 1943) (guitar, bass, drums). John Peterson (b. January 8, 1945; San Francisco, CA) (drums) joined in 1966. After gaining attention as the surf-oriented Tikis in San Francisco, they were signed to Warner Bros. by producer Lenny Waronker, and they scored one of the sunniest hit singles of the 1967 Summer of Love with a version of Paul Simon's "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)." Their brand of wistful, Roaring '20s pop enjoyed only a brief vogue, roughly from late 1966 to mid-1967, but they managed to get a few more minor chart singles -- notably Van Dyke Parks' "Come to the Sunshine" and covers of "Anything Goes" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" -- and released four albums before disbanding in 1970. Templeman went on to become one of Warner Bros.' primary staff producers. As Time Goes By (1976) marked a partial reunion of the group.

One of the bands that came to Warner Bros. in their buyout of Autumn Records were the Tikis. They had only recorded a handful of singles, and in terms of musical direction and group identity, they definitely had potential. Enter producer Lenny Waronker and session musician/arranger/songwriter/general musical architect Van Dyke Parks. The two of them brought then-drummer Ted Templeman up to the front as co-lead vocalist, along with Dick Scoppettone, and created a soft-rock identity for the group, renaming them Harpers Bizarre. Their first single was perhaps their greatest shot: a cover of the then-brand new Paul Simon song, "Feelin' Groovy." Buttressed by an amazing Leon Russell arrangement and some great performances from the A-list of L.A. session cats, the song quickly went into the Top Ten. The resulting album is almost as great as the single, with songs by Van Dyke Parks ("Come to the Sunshine"), Randy Newman ("Debutante's Ball"), and others. An excellent and definitive slice of California soft pop. The 2001 CD reissue on Sundazed adds two bonus tracks, both taken from the 1966 "Bye, Bye, Bye"/"Lost My Love Today" single by the Tikis, the San Francisco group that evolved into Harper's Bizarre."

VA - The Best Of The BubbleGum Years

Mp3\77Mb
****
Bubblegum was a youth-driven AM reaction to the increasingly louder, longer, more sophisticated rock of late-'60s FM radio. The songs were performed by an interchangeable array of faceless bands -- many consisting of the same members -- but they were always tight (usually under 2:50) and, in most cases, surprisingly memorable. At its worst, bubblegum was only a step above the nursery rhyme -- catchy, but childish and overly repetitive. As it grew louder and harder (but not longer), it eventually morphed into glam rock (Slade, Sweet) in the mid-'70s before morphing again into punk rock (the Ramones, the Damned) in the mid- to late '70s and twee pop (Beat Happening, Heavenly) in the '80s and '90s. This Special Music compilation includes Buddah Records' top singles from the bubblegum era. The strongest include Lemon Pipers' Hollies-inspired "Green Tambourine," 1910 Fruitgum Co.'s melodic "1, 2, 3 Red Light," Music Explosion's driving "Little Bit of Soul," and Ohio Express' "Yummy Yummy Yummy," one of the most delightfully ridiculous songs ever written: "yummy yummy yummy/I've got love in my tummy/and I feel like loving you." Some of the others are just weaker versions of earlier hits ("Chewy, Chewy," "Goody Goody Gumdrops"), whereas "Rice Is Nice" is just plain ludicrous (not necessarily a bad thing as far as bubblegum is concerned). The Jagger Z's rocking "The Rapper" provides the link between bubblegum and the glam rock to come. Since this is a Buddah compilation, popular non-label acts like the Archies, the Partridge Family, and Tommy James & the Shondells are not included.

THE CRESCENDOES - CRESCENDOES (1966)

Mp3|108Mb
*****
NEWS BY JANCY
Formed in the early sixties in Weymouth, England, The Crescendoes toured extensively in the UK, often working as support band for groups such as The Searchers and The Swinging Blues Jeans, prior to leaving England for a ‘short’ tour of Europe. In Germany they were an immediate success, the ‘short’ tour was extended, and for the following years, throughout the mid-sixties, the band was based in Frankfurt. From there they toured widely, not only throughout Germany, but also in Scandinavia, France, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland. Rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the leading ‘Show Bands’, they were soon offered a recording contract with Metronome Records, and the release of their first single, Heidi Heidi Ho, became a surprise success. This was quickly followed by another record publication Little Egypt, and their first album was released in the mid-sixties to coincide with a television appearance on Music from Studio B with Chris Howland. More television shows followed with appearances on the legendary Beat Club and Drehschiebe, and at the height of their popularity they were regular guests on Beat-Club, a weekly radio show broadcast from Frankfurt, with Heinz Lukasz. The subject of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, The Crescendoes appeared at all the major venues in Germany, including special guest appearances at the legendary Star Club and Top Ten Club in Hamburg. They worked alongside many of the most popular recording stars of the swinging sixties, including Gilbert Becaud, Chris Andrews, Vivi Bach, Heidi Bruhl, and after an appearance with Tony Sheriden, when they backed him in cabaret, he asked if they would like to tour Germany with him as his backing group. However, their own busy schedule made this impossible as they were also in demand back home in England, where they regularly returned for tours of the major venues throughout England, Wales and Scotland.

The Motions - Introduction to The Motion(1965)

RE: reupload

Mp3 320\67 Mb
*****************
All but one of the dozen songs on the Motions' debut LP were penned by Robbie van Leeuwen, their reliance upon original material in itself setting them apart from many non-British European bands. It's fair but derivative mainstream British Invasion-style rock, neither too pop nor too R&B-oriented. Van Leeuwen gets into Continental-style mordant folk music on "I'll Follow the Sun" (not the Beatles song) and attractive beat balladry on "No Matter Where You Run." But usually this is brash rock with echoes of both Merseybeat and early mod rock (some Kinks influences are especially evident). It's simultaneously moody and exuberant, yet a little anonymous-sounding, the best and most tuneful track being "For Another Man." This album and the group's second LP, 1966's Their Own Way, have been combined onto one CD on a 2001 Pseudonym reissue, with the addition of seven bonus tracks (all but one from non-LP 1965-1966 singles).(AllMusic)
