A piano-playing prodigy, Carole King had an ear for melody that matched the music pouring from the radio during that frenzied mid-50s period. Gerry Goffin divided his time between the folk music of Greenwich Village coffee houses, and big Broadway musicals. With a folder full of lyrics, Gerry was searching for someone to set them to music, and when a friend suggested a pianoplaying acquaintance, there began one of the greatest rock & roll songwriting partnerships… When The Beatles cut their first LP ‘Please Please Me’, “Chains” – a Goffin & King hit for the Cookies, was among the songs recorded that historic day in 1963. John Lennon later testified: “when Paul and I began we wanted to be the British Goffin & King” – and on these 3 CDs you can hear 60 good reasons why.
