The Cowsills -
The Rain, The Park & Other Things 1967-1969
The Rain, the Park & Other Things Review by Bruce Eder.
If anyone ever needed proof that no one -- or, at least, no one with any common sense -- is really in charge at the major record labels, the existence of this 14-song collection of the Cowsills' best tracks is it. It's one of about three Cowsills compilations that have appeared, directly or indirectly, from their label since the advent of the CD era -- and remember, we're talking about a group that only had three really big hits. But what is amazing is that its contents are identical to the same label's release of The Best of the Cowsills, which originally showed up a year earlier and has since been reissued by Collectables (under license from Polydor's parent company, Universal) with a list price three dollars lower than this CD's. What is here, ironically enough, is beyond reproach, interweaving the group's big hits, "The Rain, the Park & Other Things," "Indian Lake," and "Hair," with some examples of their beguiling psychedelic pop and displaying their superb singing and arrangements throughout. But unless one is a sucker for goofy cover art, there's not one good reason to buy this CD, as opposed to Collectables' The Best of the Cowsills -- although anyone giving this or the other CD a listen will probably want to go for the reissue of We Can Fly as well, for a really good look at the group's best work.
