Originally a jazz band , became 'Col Joye and the Joy Boys' when Kevin's bother, Col joined in 1957. They had ten Top 10 hits in the Sydney charts alone from 1959 to 1962, including four #1s

Col Joye's backing band, The Joy Boys (who formed in 1957), included his brothers pianist Kevin and bass player Keith. The rest of the lineup was lead guitarist Norm Day, rhythm guitarist Dave Bridge, saxophonist Laurie Erwin and drummer Johnny Bogie. The band backed Col Joye on his many hits, but they also released several of their own singles, many of which charted, especially in Sydney where nine made the Top 40 from 1960 to 1963. They also had several Top 40 entries in the other major capital cities. ''Smoky Mokes'' was their biggest hit, followed by ''Southern 'Rora'', an original instrumental in honour of the Southern Aurora, a new Sydney-Melbourne express train (1962, #5 Sydney #5 Melbourne #5 Brisbane #2 Adelaide). 

They also released a number of albums: 'Col Joye’s Joy Boys' (1961), New Old Time (1962), 'The Joy Boys Fabulous Hits' (1962), 'Cookin' up a Party' (1963) and 'The Surfin' Stompin Joys (1964) all on the Festival label. Dave Bridge left the band in 1961 to begin a quite successful solo career. Before they disbanded in 1966, they toured Vietnam in 1966 supporting Col Joye and other artists who provided the entertainment for aussie troops.  Cole became a star on television pop show Bandstand.
