VA - The Story of Oak Records 1964-68 (1999) @ 320


'The Story of Oak Records' initially appeared in 1994 as a vinyl-only issue on the Tenth Planet label. For many reasons sound quality, licensing restrictions, further Oak label discoveries, a more ruthless editing policy, different running length this CD edition has a markedly different line-up of Oak artefacts than its vinyl predecessor. On a related matter, the CD liner notes are, due to the difficulties of squeezing a gatefold sleeve's-worth of print into a CD booklet and still attempting to make it visible to the naked eye, a far less Olympian affair than the original notes. However, since the issue of the vinyl edition, the Tenth Planet label has issued numerous albums by groups featured herein, and the full story of acts like Five Steps Beyond, the Kingpins, the Mike Stuart Span, Pete Miller and the Wild Oats can be found on their own album showcases, thereby reducing the need for a similarly in-depth critique on this CD. And finally... 'The Story of Oak Records' is dedicated to all the faithful fans and friends who have made "When's the next Story of Oak coming out?" a worldwide question. With appreciation, the answer is sooner than you might imagine.
