Prelude - After the Goldrush; The Dawn-Pye Anthology 1973-1977

Somehow Prelude never quite got the full attention that they deserved. After breaking with a radio hit a cappella version of Neil Young’s After The Goldrush, they proceeded to issue four strong albums which showcased their acoustic playing, sublime harmonies and strengths in melodic songwriting. Their trump card was Irene Hume’s rich voice, blending so well with the two male voices. Sadly, it wasn’t always used to its full potential, sometimes being left to linger in the background.

Where she emerges as lead, or at least prominent, there is a joyous quality to Prelude’s work, most evident in Paris Morning, She Only Knows Why and Amsterdam. Brian Hume and Ian Vardy wrote most of the material, maintaining a consistently high standard on at least three of the four albums represented here. Any covers the group chose to sing usually sounded fresh, like their take on the Fairport anthem Meet On The Ledge. Ricky Nelson’s Never Be Anyone Else But You, however, veers a little towards the twee.
