Unknown Mystery 60's Group

"The songs released on the Distortions CD in 1997 were found on a reel to reel tape at an outdoor flea market in Philadelphia. Nothing was known about the group except for the song titles which were written on the tape box.

In 2001 Octopus Records attempted to track down the identity of the band and eventually made contact with the band's drummer, living in Spain. A second and a third volumes (2007, on Birdhouse Records) of material were released but the band elected to remain anonymous."

It seems that the "Unknown Mystery 60's Group" is in fact a clever modern artistic project from Philadelphia, led by guitarist Tim Shea and made to appear to sound like it was recorded in the 60's.

The reasons why are unclear; based on the sound of the record, imaginatively titled Unknown Mystery 60's Group, Vol. 2, it shouldn't be due to embarrassment. The songs are OK; mostly folky garage rock with a few tracks leaning in a more psychedelic direction. The performances aren't bad either; they rely on nicely chiming guitars and harmony vocals in a Byrdsy style..
