The group was formed on June 22, 1960, at the Gdańsk "Jazz Club," on the initiative of Polish cultural figure Franciszek Walicki. The club was decorated in red and black, which inspired the name of the newly created group. The group was established following the dissolution of the ensemble "Rhythm and Blues," which had existed for only one year.
The band’s original lineup was as follows: Przemysław Gwoździewski on saxophone, Wiesław Bernolak on guitar, Zbigniew Wilk on piano, Wiesław Damencki on double bass, and Ryszard Żuk on percussion; the vocalists were Marek Tarnowski, Andrzej Jordan, and Janusz Godlewski.
Later, the following soloists performed with the ensemble: Henryk Fabian, Toni Keczer, Jacek Lech, Helena Majdaniec, Katarzyna Sobczyk, Karin Stanek, and others.In addition, a great many instrumentalists had the opportunity to take part in the ensemble.

The group made its debut on July 23, 1960, at the "Żak" student club in Gdańsk[1]. Their first EP was recorded on April 23, 1961, and featured four rock 'n' roll tracks—songs that had previously been performed by prominent Western musicians. This EP stands as the first Polish record to feature foreign rock 'n' roll. The ensemble participated in numerous competitions for aspiring vocalists; it was in this setting that performers such as Wojciech Gąssowski, Helena Majdaniec, and Marianna Wróblewska began their careers.
The group was very popular and took part in a large number of music festivals (the Sopot International Song Festival, the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole). In 1961, the group organized an all-Polish competition titled "Searching for Young Talent."
On April 13, 1967, Czerwono-Czarni performed alongside The Rolling Stones during the latter's concert in Warsaw.
In 1968, the group presented an avant-garde musical work—a beat mass titled "Pan przyjacielem moim" ("The Lord Is My Friend"), composed by Katarzyna Gärtner and Kazimierz Grześkowiak. The piece premiered at St. Christopher’s Church in Podkowa Leśna, near Warsaw.
Essentially, the ensemble ceased its activities in 1976.
Several of its vocalists went on to pursue solo careers, including Helena Majdaniec, Katarzyna Sobczyk, Karin Stanek, Maciej Kossowski, and Jacek Lech.
The group released 5 studio albums, 24 EPs, 9 compilation albums, and 6 singles.
