The Tielman Brothers were the first Dutch-Indonesian band that successfully went international in the 1950s.

They were one of the pioneers of rock and roll in The Netherlands. The band was quite famous in Europe, long before The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Their music was called Indorock, a fusion of Indonesian and Western music, and has roots in Kroncong. MORE...

The story of THE TIELMAN BROTHERS begin in Surabaya, where the 4 little brothers Tielman and little sister Jane started performing together in 1945 folk songs and traditional dances. Father Herman a captain and later quartermaster in the KNIL (Royal Dutch Indonesian Army) and he had stayed in a Japanese concentration camp. He owned a house in Surabaya and started to play music together with his friends. Herman Tielman was a gifted all round musician and he was the one that supplied Reggy, Ponthon, Andy, Loulou and Jane with their rich musical luggage. From the started Ponthon wanted to play the big double bass. Reggy wanted to play banjo and little Loulou was fond of the drums. Andy learned to play lead guitar. By rights, if talent were a consideration, The Roadrunners would be remembered alongside such 1960's British blues outfits as the Rolling Stones, the Animals, and the Pretty Things. At least, they'd have been doing the kind of profitable concertizing in northern Europe that performers Alexis Korner and even the Downliners Sect were doing in the late 1960's. They never made it that far, however, despite counting the Beatles among their more outspoken fans. 

The Roadrunners were part of the second wave of Liverpool beat bands, formed in Birkenhead in the wake of groups like The Big Three and younger first-wave bands like The Beatles and The Searchers. The group members had originally gotten together as the Tenabeats in 1961 or early 1962, with Dave Percy on lead guitar and vocals. The group's real star after the renamed themselves the Roadrunners, however, was Mike Hart, an architecture student with a great voice. Pete Mackey played bass and also sang, John Peacock was the group's pianist, and Dave Boyce played drums. Sometime between 1961 and 1963, Dave Percy exited the group's line-up, leaving the core of the group as a quartet. 

In contrast to a lot of their contemporaries, the Roadrunners played more rhythm-and-blues than rock 'n roll, and they became frequent performers at the Cavern Club, often on the same billing with the Beatles—indeed, they were on the same bill as the Beatles on the latter group's final engagement there. The Roadrunners played and sang American r&b like they meant it, and were extremely popular both in Liverpool and Hamburg, where they won a competition at the Star-Club and could have made a major name for themselves. Indeed, George Harrison, when asked once about the Rolling Stones early in the climb to fame by the latter band, remarked that Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and company were about as good as the Roadrunners, and he meant it as a compliment to the London band. 

The Roadrunners were also out in front of the Rolling Stones in some respects, covering Arthur Alexander's "You Better Move On" before the Stones put their rendition on tape for anyone to hear. They could also rock out on Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry numbers as well as any band in England, romping and stomping over songs like "Beautiful Delilah" and (natch!) "Roadrunner" like they'd invented them, the latter being an especially fine showcase for their work. 

What they didn't do, of course, was write songs, and this limited their appeal—exciting as their records and stage act were—as more and more of the competition, especially the likes of the Rolling Stones, began coming up with original numbers that had their own twists on American r&b. Getting airplay on covers—however good they might have been—of American songs was a dicey prospect at best for any northern act at the outset of the beat boom in Liverpool, and became tougher as original songs became the norm in the mid-1960's. If anything else held the Roadrunners back, it was the fact that their singer-guitarist Mike Hart refused to give up his architecture studies, and that, as a result, he was only able to go abroad with the band during semester breaks. This limited their prospects even in Germany, where they could've made a good living. Still, their reputation was such that the group played the First R&B Festival in Birmingham, England—produced and recorded by Giorgio Gomelsky—on a bill with the Spencer Davis Rhythm and Blues Quartet, Steam Packet, Long John Baldry and the Hoochie Coochie Men, the Yardbirds, and Sonny Boy Williamson II. 

There was even some interest for a time from Decca Records, which was quite a compliment considering that they already had the Stones under contract and were looking at groups like the Small Faces. Hart, however, became wary of the overtures and what they would mean in terms of softening the group's sound. The group never made the jump to international success that those other bands (or their key members) did, but not for lack of trying. In 1964, the group's line-up expanded with the addition of pair of saxophone players, Nick Carver and John Phillips (who also played the flute), who later was a part of the Eyes, a Liverpool-spawned outfit that also featured Klaus Voorman. The group recorded a live album at the Star-Club, released under the auspices of Ariola Records, which showed an evolution in their sound—where the group had started out under the influence of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, by late 1963 they were showing the influence of James Brown and Bobby Bland, as well as Arthur Alexander and Larry Williams. The Roadrunners had a formidible sound, and at his best Mike Hart was a near-match for Mick Jagger or Eric Burdon as a soul singer. Their big break never came, however—at least, not outside of Germany. A second Star-Club album, shared with the group Shorty and Them, appeared in 1965. By the middle of that year, however, the line-up had begun to crack, Phillips having moved on (succeeded by Bob Harrison on trumpet), and Mike Hart finally exited the group. He joined the Liverpool Scene and was succeeded in the Roadrunners by Mike Byrne on vocals and Mike Kontzle on the guitar, while Terry McCusker took over on the drums from Dave Boyce. The group played out its string in Germany under Peter Mackey's leadership into early 1966, before they disbanded. Mackey and Hart later joined forces in an attempt to start Hart on a solo recording career. In 1999, Bear Family Records reissued the Roadrunners Star-Club album as part of its four-CD set Die Ariola Star-Club Aufnahmen. Mike Byrne started a Beatles museum in Liverpool in the 1980's.

At about the same time as Centerville, Ohio rock group Ivan and the Sabres was enjoying their first taste of success with the release of their popular regional song “Just Let Her Go”, the Chandells – another local band from Centerville – was forming. Although they were together for approximately two short years, the Chandells would indisputably become the top combo in the Dayton area. In addition to being named the # 1 band (out of about 800 total) in Southern Ohio, they recorded ten fantastic demos that remained unreleased but that showed the true promise the group had. After a name change to Bittervetch and the release of an irresistible single that would represent their sole vinyl output, the band’s run at the big time would be cut short. A rock & roll band from Portland, Oregon, the Kingsmen's one big hit "Louie, Louie" defined the garage-band style and became one of the all-time classics. The original lineup included Jack Ely (lead singer and guitar), Lynn Easton (drums), Mike Mitchell (lead guitar), Bob Nordby (bass), and Don Galucci (piano). When the Kingsmen's ragged, stumbling and accidentally brilliant version of Richard Berry's "Louie Louie" broke out as a national hit in 1964, it created a three-chord stomping template for garage and frat bands everywhere, and the Kingsmen themselves never abandoned the organ-driven R&B approach that spawned the song, working the formula into other hits like "Jolly Green Giant" and the huge, crushing "Killer Joe." This set collects the essential tracks and tosses in a few instrumentals, as well. A few of the cuts are supposedly done live in concert, but one can never be sure with the Kingsmen, since the group's early albums would frequently have dubbed in audience noise added to studio performances. Not that it matters much with a group this immediate and raw -- the Kingsmen hardly needed audience noise, real or not, to sound exciting.

This 23-song compilation shows a group who had the pop sensibilities and range of the Tremeloes, and who could do credible soul covers and more than decent psychedelia, but somehow never developed a distinctive sound of their own. The result is an almost dizzying array of styles, represented by eight singles that were perfectly good records but which seldom sounded like each other. The Bystanders' early sides, from 1965, were heavily Beatles-influenced, their debut recalling the Liverpool quartet's early-1963 recordings, but also displaying smooth pop hooks reminiscent of Herman's Hermits on their better singles. By the time of "Have I Offended the Girl" in 1966, they start to sound more like the early Who vocally, but the other side of the same single is the dramatic pop ballad "My Love -- Come Home," and their next single, "If You Walk Away," is somewhere midway between Unit 4+2 and Tom Jones, while their cover of "98.6" is cheerfully upbeat in a way that recalls Herman's Hermits at their most embarrassingly upbeat. And then they come up with a decent cover of "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1967. Beyond that point, the group turned toward a gentle brand of psychedelic pop, represented by "Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day," "Pattern People" (where they sound a bit like the Association), and the poppish, upbeat "Green Grass," moving into ethereal psychedelia on the sitar-laden "Cave of Clear Light." And then, just as their history as the Bystanders was coming to an end, they plunge into the Bee Gees-inspired sides "This World Is My World" and "Painting the Time" (think the trio's late-psychedelic era). This CD is filled with moments like that, little pop/rock jewels that are widely scattered and don't exactly spell out a full story of anybody, but are pretty satisfying on their own terms. The disc also includes a brace of unreleased tracks, among them a rocking cover of "Cheryl's Going Home" and interesting renditions of "The Little Girl I Once Knew" (where the harmonies intermingle well with the lean instrumental sound) and "Dang Me," plus the two prizes of the 23 songs here, "My Way of Thinking," a hard-rocking piece of U.K.-style garage rock, and "Grapevine," a blue-eyed soul classic that shows what this group was truly capable of in the way of original songs, when they aimed that high. Despite a couple of British Top Ten hits in 1964-65, the Rockin' Berries made no dent in the U.S. market at the height of the British Invasion. Much of the Berries' output reflected the lighter pop-rock face of the British beat boom, emphasizing catchy, carefully constructed tunes supplied by British and American songwriters, with high harmonies indebted to the Four Seasons and the Beach Boys. The Berries wrote little of their own material, and this, combined with the wimpiness of some of their recordings, doomed them to little recognition, and little critical respect, even among British Invasion aficionados. The Liverbirds (sometimes spelled Liver Birds) were one of the more distinctive outfits in Liverpool (and anywhere else, for that matter) by virtue of the fact that they were a hard-rocking all-girl group, self-contained instrumentally and focused on rhythm-and-blues. They weren't too successful musically in Liverpool, but in 1963 they went to Hamburg, where they became one of the most popular acts ever to play the Star Club. The Casuals were a British pop group from Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. They are best known for their 1968 #2 UK hit, "Jesamine"

Originally formed by John Tebb (piano & vocals) and Howard Newcombe (guitar), they added Don Fortune (drums) and Zenon Kawolski (bass), and became The Casuals in 1961. Upon turning professional in 1962 Fortune and Kawolski left, to be replaced by Mick Brey and Ian Good.

In 1965 they won the TV talent show Opportunity Knocks three times, leading to a recording contract with Fontana Records who issued their debut single "If You Walk Out", which was unsuccessful. In 1966 Alan "Plug" Taylor (bass) joined, and the band moved to Italy, where they signed with CBS in Milan to record Italian language covers of British hit singles. These included a #1 Italian single covering the Bee Gee's "Massachusetts". Good left in mid 1967, and was not replaced, but when Brey left later that year, Bob O'Brien joined on drums.

In 1968, whilst still in Italy, The Casuals switched to Decca Records, who released the single "Jesamine" which charted, so the band came back from Italy to promote the record, which reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart late in 1968. "Jesamine" was a cover version of The Bystanders' "When Jesamine Goes" issued in February 1968, and was co-written by Marty Wilde and Ronnie Scott (the Bystanders' manager, not the famous jazz player), under the pseudonym Frere Manston and Jack Gellar. The follow-up single, "Toy", (written by Chris Andrews) also made the Top 40, peaking at #30, They were also successful in Germany, where "Jesamine" hit #9, and "Toy" went to #27, but their first and only album, Hour World, was issued too late to capitalise on these successful singles. Chris Evans stood in for Newcombe when he was ill, and when Taylor and O'Brien left in 1970, Evans became a permanent member, along with Lloyd Courtney. None of the following four singles managed to chart, and the group was eventually dropped by Decca in 1971.

They signed to Parlophone in 1972 and released "Tara Tiger Girl", but the single went nowhere, nor did a single "American Jam" for which the band was renamed "American Jam Band", although, as both singles had the same B-side, the link was obvious. They left Parlophone for Dawn Records in 1974, but after their final single, "Good Times", flopped, they disbanded in 1976

The Grass Roots had a series of major hits -- most notably "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes," and "Two Divided by Love" -- that help define the essence of the era's best AM radio. Although the group's members weren't even close to being recognizable, and their in-house songwriting was next to irrelevant, the Grass Roots managed to chart 14 Top 40 hits, including seven gold singles and one platinum single, and two had hits collections that effortlessly went gold. Let's Live For Today 1967

Released in the spring of 1967, Let's Live for Today was almost a musical throwback, steeped in folk-rock, which was fairly passé at the time, rather than psychedelia, but that's what makes it so appealing to listeners today. Listeners in 1967 were probably disappointed that there was nothing on the album as dramatic or memorable as the title track, but everything else is solid folk-rock with a pretty hard edge, which allows it to stand quite well alongside rival releases by the Beau Brummels, the Cryan Shames, the Blue Things, et al. The second album by this version of the Grass Roots -- who changed the spelling of their name to "Grassroots" here (and then changed it back two albums later) -- was a serious departure from its predecessor. Having reached the Top 10 with "Let's Live for Today" and made the Top 100 with the accompanying album -- all done under the direction of producers Steve Barri and P.F. Sloan, with a lot of outside musicians playing on them -- the group members were eager to flex their own musical muscles. MINT TATTO -(Mint Tattoo - Mint Tattoo (1968) Rather mainstream blues-rock power trio, devoid of any progressive formulas, featuring Bruce Stephens (vocals, guitar), Ralph 'Burns' Kellog (bass, keyboards) and Gregg Thomas (drums). Mint Tattoo recorded one album for DOT in 1968, from which the single "I'm Talking About You/Mark of the Beast" was also released in 1969. Stephens and Kellog will be together again in Blue Cheer on "Blue Cheer" (1969). Gregg Thomas will join Fabulous Rhinestones and later will play with Jim McGuinn.

KAK - (Kak - Kak-Ola (Bonus 1968-69)Excellent psych and blues-rock band, caressed by some light lysergic varnish, formed in Sacramento in 1967. Kak, a quartet consisting of Dehner Patten (guitar, voice), Gary Yoder (guitar, vocals), Joseph Damrell (bass, sitar, percusions) and Chris Lockheed (drums, keyboards), surely was among one of the best and most underrated californian bands of its era. Their sole album "Kak" (Epic 1969) is nowadays one of the most sought-after by collectors. A fascinating record, rich with 'psichy' visions and mesmerizing electric ballads led by the shining guitar of Gary Yoder. From the LP was taken the single "I've Got the Time/Disbelievin". The second track, in particular, is an oniric electric pearl which outstands by its eccentricity in a lake of acoustic themes. To be remarked are also the long 'suite' "Golgotha/Mirage/Rain", a splendid mind trip close to some galactic temperatures we can find in Crosby and Kantner, grooved by a sharp and distorted guitar, "Bryte'n'Clear Day", penetrating like a sword blade and the catching "Lemonade Kid" which, if graced by appropriate exposure, could have been able to push the whole album straight up into the U.S. Charts. Gary Yoder will be with Blue Cheer in "The Original Human Beings" and "Oh! pleasant Hope" while drummer Chris Lokheed will be with Randy Holden on live performances also contributing to his solo effort "Population II".

THE OTHER HALF - (The Other Half - Other Half (1966-69)A blues and psychedelia group from San Francisco arisen from the ashes of the Sons of Adam (a cult garage outfit who recorded three singles for Alamo and Decca Records, one of which "Feathered Fish" was penned by Arthur Lee of Love and another being a cover of Yardbirds "You're a Better Man Than I". The band, a quintet led by imaginative guitarist Randy Holden, recorded four singles between '67 and '68:"Wonderful Day/Flight of the Dragon lady", "No Doubt About It/I Need You", "Oz Lee Eaves Drops/Morning Fire" all for ACTA and the best known garage-psychepunk "Mr.Pharmacist" (later covered by Fall) coupled with "I've Come So far" for GNP Crescendo. Its album "Other Half" (Atca, 1969) is still regarded as one of the masterpieces of U.S. psychedelia of the Sixties. After the group has disbanded, Randy Holden was involved with Blue Cheer performing on one side of "New ! Improved !" then recording the most acclaimed solo "Population II" for Hobbit (later reissued by Line): over thirty minutes of solo guitar dressed with original passages and homages to Hendrix. An extreem metallic trip into the mind - superb are "Blue My Mind" and "Keeper of My Flame" - in which some moments of exhaustion are not absent too. Craig Tarwater, another guitarist from The Other Half, will end up in Daily Flash, the postumous album of which, including the two original singles together with live stuff, has been released in Britain by Psycho in early Eighties.

SILVER METRE - (Silver Metre - Silver Metre - 1970)A group from the Bay Area formed by Leigh Stephens in 1969, with Jack Reynolds (vocals), Pete Sears (bass, keyboards) and Mick Waller (drums; ex Jeff Beck Group). Silver Metre released an interesting album recorded in London: "Silver Metre" (National General, 1969), belonging on different styles, from traditional rock ballad to american country blues all treated by very slicky guitars, keyboards and vocals. A quiet and 'athmospheric' record characterized by not the less than three covers of Elton John's songs ("Ballad of a Well Known Gun", "Country Comfort" and the beautiful "Sixty Years On") together with original numbers among which outstand the fascinating blues theme of "Dog End" and "Nightflight" featuring keyboards and guitars on the fore. Stephens and Waller both joined the Pilot project in 1971.

PILOT - (Pilot - Pilot (1971)Pilot was an outfit which gathered too many elements. Formed by two Americans, guitarists - ex Blue Cheer - Bruce Stephens and Leigh Stephens, and three Englishmen, blues guitarist Martin Quittenton (formerly in Steamhammer), drummer Mick Waller (from Silver Metre) and rock-jazz bassist Neville Whitehead (just coming from the sessions of 'The End of an Ear' with Robert Wyatt, later joined Isotope and Suntreader), such a bunch could never find an original direction, tottering between easy and ragged blues themes and conformist rock-songs. Pilot recorded two albums: "Pilot" (RCA) in 1971 and "Point of View" (RCA, unreleased) in 1972. To be mentioned, the solo work by Bruce Stephens: "Bruce Stephens" (World United Records, 1978), re-released as "Watch That First Step" for the Strawberry label in 1981. He also made an appearance with The Original Haze (later transformed into Fine Wine / Moby Grape).

LEIGH STEPHENS -( Leigh Stephens - Red Weather (1969) The last notes are saved for Blue Cheer's primeval guitarist. Leigh Stephens, after the Cheers and Silver Metre, had been living in England for many years being in friendly terms with musicians from the London 'underground' scene. He kept working with drummer Kevin Westlake (former Blossom Toes) and Nicky Hopkins, in addition to other sessionmen with the help of whom he recorded his first solo work, the excellent "Red Weather" (Philips, 1969), an album of melodic psychedelia rich with ballads and moments of electric extasy. Less interesting results shows his second effort "... and Cast of Thousands" (Charisma, 1971), too much in a redundant 'progressive' mood, overhelmed by a massive use of too many instrument. The last appearance of Leigh Stephens will be with Foxtrot.

Arguably, the finest to emerge from the subsequent American crop was the James Gang. Despite penning a few of classic rock radio's most enduring songs, the James Gang ultimately failed to deliver on their initial promise, as constant lineup juggling ultimately derailed the group.

The James Gang's debut LP, Yer' Album, was very much a first record and very much a record of its time. The heavy rock scene of the period was given to extensive jamming, and four tracks ran more than six minutes each. The group had written some material, but they were still something of a cover band, and the disc included their extended workouts on Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" and the Yardbirds' "Lost Woman," the latter a nine-minute version complete with lengthy guitar, bass, and drum solos. But in addition to the blues rock there were also touches of pop and progressive rock, mostly from Walsh who displayed a nascent sense of melody, not to mention some of the taste for being a cutup that he would display in his solo career. Walsh's "Take a Look Around" must have made an impression on Pete Townshend during the period before the album's release when the James Gang was opening for the Who since Townshend borrowed it for the music he was writing for the abortive Lifehouse follow-up to Tommy. If "Wrapcity (i.e., Rhapsody) in English," a minute-long piano and strings interlude, seems incongruous in retrospect, recall that this was an eclectic era. But the otherwise promising "Fred," which followed, broke down into a pedestrian jazz routine, suggesting that the band was trying to cram too many influences onto one record and sometimes into one song. Nevertheless, they were talented improvisers, as the open-ended album closer, Jerry Ragavoy and Mort Shuman's "Stop," made clear. After ten minutes, Szymczyk faded the track out, but Walsh was still going strong. Yer' Album contained much to suggest that the James Gang, in particular its guitarist, had a great future, even if it was more an album of performances than compositions.
