The band's history began in 1961, when Béla Neményi, a future law student at the University of Budapest, decided to form his own band that would play contemporary youth music. His group included saxophonist Árpád Szelméczy, keyboardist Joska Harczy, drummer György Neubauer, and bassist László Sánko. In 1961, a friend of Sánko's sent him Little Richard records by mail from the US, and Western music became his main hobby. At the time, only two bands in Hungary—Illés and Metro—were attempting to play anything similar, so the guys usually performed songs written by Metro and the early Illés. Since Sánko quickly became the face of the band, the band became known as Sánko, but Béla Neményi remained the band's leader. Neményi's parents had a telephone at home—an unheard-of luxury at the time, which later greatly helped him organize concerts and secure contracts.

Stylistically, their ensemble was half Dixieland, half rock 'n' roll. Their first major achievement was a performance at the Circus Maximus in 1962. Another event where the group made a name for themselves was a performance in the fishing village of Boglár on Lake Balaton at a hippie gathering in the summer of 1963. News of this gathering spread like wildfire among Budapest's youth, and crowds flocked to the lake. But word reached government authorities, who banned trains from stopping in Boglár. Ultimately, the organizers were arrested by the police, the hippies were dispersed, and many spectators were left to sleep in the open air. This story propelled "Sánko" to fame, but at the end of August, the keyboardist and drummer left the band, ending the original lineup.

A little later, Neményi and Szelmeczy conceived the idea of ​​forming a new ensemble, this time featuring organist Péter Gellért, guitarist László Tasnádi, and bassist Ferenc Bokány. The latter was one of the few Hungarian musicians at the time who had studied classical bass guitar. So, in the fall of 1963, they added Beatles songs to their repertoire and began performing at a club on Tobacco Street (Dohány utca). For the new band, the guys built their own equipment: speakers, amplifiers, and even stole 12-inch speakers from a factory. In the spring of 1964, their venue became the Építők club on Sándor Petőfi Street. Until mid-1964, the band was called "Devils," but then Ferenc Bokány left for Metro, and the group disbanded again.

In the summer of 1964, Neményi reunited with Szankó, and they began searching for new musicians. They were considering inviting Tamás Bárta or Tamás Mercsényi from Kon-Tiki to fill the key guitar spot, but Bárta joined Syconor, replacing Neményi's younger brother Tibor, and Mercsényi went to work abroad. By chance, their classmate László Kálmán recommended Béla Radics (Radics Béla).

Radić brought along drummer István Pintér and organist György Rozsnyói, who were playing with him in the amateur band Nautilus at the time. Afterward, the musicians decided to fully embrace the beat style, taking Scampolo as their model. They focused on hits by The Beatles and Rolling Stones: "It's All Over Now," "A Hard Day's Night," "I Should Have Known Better," "The Hollies," and others.

The first concert of the updated team took place with great success on November 15, 1964 at the University Theater. The musicians could not decide for a long time what name to write on the poster: they wanted their ensemble to have an English name that all Europeans could understand, something like «Omega» or «Metro». Так возикла группа «Atlantis» («Atlantis», in Hungarian transliteration «Atlantis»). The joint effective game of Radič and Shanko excited the crowd of listeners, and the hall was in an uplifting mood. They said about the musicians that at that moment they were the best interpreters of "The Beatles" in Hungary.
