Metro's predecessor, Zenith, was formed in 1960 under the leadership of Zoran Stevanoviti. They initially performed at the Mood bar at the Western Railway Station (the ground floor of today's McDonald's), which also served as a youth club on weekends. The following year, the band signed their first record deal with Metro Club. At the time, the band included vocalist and lead guitarist Zoran Stevanoviti, his brother, rhythm guitarist Dusan Stevanoviti, pianist András Rudas, saxophonist Zoltán Elekes, bassist Béla Máka, and drummer István Bálint. Zoran Stevanoviti became a renowned vocalist as the band's frontman.
Zenith performed songs by famous foreign bands such as the Shadows, Roy Orbison, Duane Eddy, and the Ventures. This type of music was rare in Hungary at the time, as albums by foreign artists had not yet been released.
During the first half of the 1960s, the Metro Club's location changed constantly: first in a building on the corner of Irányi and Egetem streets, later briefly on Petőfi Sándor street, then on Rákóczi street, and finally, in 1965, it moved to the legendary building at 22 Dohány street, which remained the Metro's permanent home until its dissolution. The band's lineup also changed: Győző Brunner played drums, Antal Szentai played saxophone, and Ferenc Bokány[1] played bass. Renowned singers also joined the band for one evening, such as Kati Kovács, Zsuzsa Koncz, Sarolta Zalátnay, and Marie Vittek.
At that time, Metro played only English and American songs. Their repertoire included recordings by Roy Orbison, the Shadows, the Kinks, Duane Eddy, Del Shannon, the Spotnicks, Chris Andrews, the Rolling Stones, Cliff Richard, the Honeycombs, John Leyton, Manfred Mann, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and the Ventures.
In 1969, the band released their first album, Metro, featuring several of their hits, such as "Citromízű Banana," "Mária Was," and "Ülök in a Pink Bath." In 1970, their first Hungarian live album, Egy este a Metro Klubban..., was released. The recordings were made using a UHER tape recorder and piano; the album itself was a huge success, with the song "Kócos kis ördögök" becoming a hit immediately after its release. At the same time, the final line-up of the “classic” Metro was formed: Otto Schöck was replaced by János Fogarási.
