VA - Soft Summer Breezes The Corby's Living Sound (2021) @ 320

VA - Soft Summer Breezes  The Corby's Living Sound (2021)
(Numero Group)

Soft Summer Breezes is the first overview of a  studio and three lifelong friends, capturing in 15 songs an overflowing pool of creativity, talent, dedication, and ideas surging in the greater Los Angeles area during the flower power era

CORBY Record label founded by Steve Waltner, Dennis Hardesty and Doug Cox while Waltner was serving in the Air Force and was stationed near Corvallis, OR. Cox and Hardesty were based in Los Angeles. Waltner then returned to Los Angeles and the three founded Corby Productions (later rebranded as Corby Enterprises, Inc.), which took ownership of the Label.

A half-generation too old to go the way of full-on love beads, kaftans, and impulsive LSD trips, the trio of Doug Cox, Denny Hardesty, and Steve Waltner nevertheless cut a swathe of sterling-quality soft-psych, sunshine pop, and garage over the back half of the 1960s. Southern California-based Corby Records took an incredibly hands-on approach, shepherding young talent with their immense songwriting and engineering skills and near-psychic musical connection.
Soft Summer Breezes: Corby’s Living Sound is the first overview of a vital studio and three lifelong friends, capturing in 15 songs an overflowing pool of creativity, talent, dedication, and ideas surging in the greater Los Angeles area during the flower power era.
Today, the three partners in Corby Records remain close friends, and once again play music, but on a more hobbyist or personal edification basis.
Akin to the hand-like ‘C’ and ‘Y’ in the final Corby label logo grasping the ‘orb’—designed by his own hand, like the two before it—Waltner has held tight onto files, paperwork, tapes, and ephemera from this era throughout the decades, amassing an archive without which this compilation would not exist. Across a hard-won half-decade, Corby Records issued more than two dozen releases, quite notable for a ’60s indie upstart. They created a strong, impressive catalog.
