Here Come the Girls, Volume 6 Six. Review by Richie
Unterberger.
Twenty-four female-sung British pop/rock singles from
1961-74, some in the girl-group style, some not; originally released on the Pye
label, the bulk of them date from the mid-'60s. Not a single one was a big hit,
and Petula Clark is the only name that will be familiar to American listeners,
although Glenda Collins, Dana Gillespie and Jackie Trent may ring some bells
among collectors. This is period British mainstream pop; if you like that
style, which is heavy on perky melodies and orchestral arrangements, this is a
mid-level journey through some typical material of the genre. If you're being
selective about your imports, there aren't any lost gems here, though some of
the tunes (by Donna Douglas, the Breakaway and Shirley Abicair) are a bit above
average.
