During the girl group era of the early '60s, no female singer broke down the barriers for women the way Lesley Gore did. She was battling it out in a totally dominated man's world, sending sentiments to the top of the charts that most women only whispered about at the time, years before it was hip, cool, politically correct, and resolvable by the ACLU. This makes her music not only important from a historical standpoint, but a quick listen to this 20-track best-of will also reveal that it's some of the classiest music from that era as well. With Quincy Jones producing her sessions and the top songwriters money can buy (Ellie Greenwich, Carole King, and Marvin Hamlisch, just for openers), it's no small wonder that records like "It's My Party," "Maybe I Know," "You Don't Own Me," "I Don't Wanna Be a Loser," "Judy's Turn to Cry," and the title track shine so brightly. The transfers on this disc shine equally as bright, with heavy prominence given to Gore's incredibly tight and impeccable double-tracked vocals. If you think of Lesley Gore as a one-hit wonder from a pre-feminist dark age of rock & roll, you really need to hear this collection.
