Jubal – Jubal (1972)

"Jubal's only album is an artifact of that time (late 1960's / early 1970's) when Nashville was a site of artistic ferment and stylistic boundary-bending. Sort of a songwriters' collective, Jubal included two of the more interesting and adventurous singer-songwriters working the scene--Dennis Linde (who wrote "Burning Love" for Elvis) and Rob Galbraith, who would later go on to produce Ronnie Milsap and others. Both Linde and Galbraith had an expansive notion of country-roots music, embracing pop and soul as well as Appalachian roots; Terry Dearmore (who would later join Barefoot Jerry) had a solid country-gospel voice; and the remaining members of Jubal (Allan Rush and Randy Cullers) wrote with a distinct rock and roll sensibility (the Hollies covered their "Courage of Your Convictions" from this album). I wouldn't call this album a country-soul masterpiece (it's not quite the equal of those first two Barefoot Jerry albums for instance, or of Mickey Newbury's early records), but the songwriting is solid and varied, and the singing and arrangements hit that sweet spot of being rootsy without falling into any recognizable genre--which may be in part why in its initial release this didn't get much traction, and Linde and Galbraith went on to pursue more radio-ready paths in their songwriting and producing work. If you like Barefoot Jerry or Mac Gayden's solo work you should like this; and for sure you should check out Rob Galbraith's "Nashville Dirt" (unfortunately, available on CD only as an expensive import) or Dennis Linde's solo album on Elektra (sadly, still no known CD release on that one)." ~  AJ Scheiber
