Los Belkings Instrumental Waves 1966 (SPA)

 

In January 1963 Wilfredo Sandoval Moreno had formed the band with Willie Nieses on the keyboard, Alberto Sánchez, Jorge Mosqueira and Jorge Sánchez who did not follow the efforts demanded by the activity to give way to the next stage.

In August 1964 the guitarists Wilfredo Sandoval and Raúl Herrera met. Wilfredo had invited musicians from the Melitón Carvajal National College student to play at his home and they were a saxophonist with the surname Belleza and a drummer whose name is not known. With them came Raúl Herrera, who finally was the one who accompanied Wilfredo in his musical ideas until today: 53 years passed.

It was then that Fernando Noriega was invited to the drums (they nicknamed him Colectivo and also called him Colia), who soon deserted but presented his cousin Kiko La Serie Alfredo Rosales. In turn, he presented Nico (of Chinese parents) as a bass player, so with Wilfredo Sandoval and Raúl Herrera they put together the following formation, which had Ernesto Reinaldi, a friend of Wilfredo in the Lince neighborhood, as vocalist.

The band made their debut in a morning at the Riva Agüero Cinema (in the El Agustino district ) and performed several nights at a night club called Tábaris , covering The Ventures , the Teen Top, Jerry and the Pacemaker. However, this bohemian atmosphere made the guitarists Wilfredo Sandoval and Raúl Herrera, 15 years old, move away from the rhythmic base (drummer).

Then Wilfredo would form a new lineup of the group with Raúl Herrera, Emilio Zavala who sang songs from Animals, Dave Clark Five. Emilio Zavala, due to his admission to the National Engineering University, leaves singing and presents Daniel Rosario on voice, José Olivera, on bass, (nicknamed Magoo for his thick glasses), (who lived half a block from the home of Pancho Guevara, drummer of Los Saicos , in Lince ) and on drums a young man of Japanese origin named Walter Aray Nozawa.

In the summer of 1965 the band made its first tour to the province, visiting the city of Tarma during carnivals, for which it was featured on radio programs in that town.

Upon their return from the tour, they began to appear on Sergio's show, hosted by DJ Sergio Vergara, first on Radio Victoria and then on television. For two months his visits were constant. On one occasion they accompanied the Brazilian singer Sergio Murillo . They also performed with the group Los 007.

At the beginning of 1966 José "Magoo" Olivera was replaced by Jerry Lam (born in Hong Kong but an English citizen ).

After a successful concert in a morning at the Cine Ídolo de Pueblo Libre , Gustavo Galliani Diaz approached them to be their representative. Galliani's first suggestion was to recommend that they become solely an instrumental group.

In November 1966, El Virrey, through his head of promotion and also disc jockey Víctor Cáceres Fuentes, organized a contest at the Tauro Cinema . The winning band could record a 45 RPM record with the record company, and the ones that won were Los Belking's. In December of that same year they finished school and began their first recordings, consisting of four 45s composed solely of versions.

In January 1967, while preparing to apply to college, Los Belking's released their first 45, which contained the songs "El Guasón" and "La Playa." After the success of the first 45 they returned to the studio for a second 45, with the songs "Black is black" and "Theme for young lovers", this last theme was an original composition by Bruce Welch, from Los Shadows . His version, with creative arrangements of his own making, became a local hit.

In April 1967 Wilfredo obtained new instruments due to the fact that he began to work in an importing house of radio parts and pieces, after which the group recorded their third and fourth 45 RPM album "Pushing Strong" / "La pipa de peace "and" Psychedelic thesis "/" Love is sad ". In none of these recordings was there any interference by El Virrey, who gave them creative freedom while they continued to be successful and offered them the possibility of recording a first LP immediately.

The LP The Sound of the Belking's , recorded in mid- 1967, contains the three songs by Andrés Roque that Wilfredo heard when he met him and the first own songs recorded by the group. Of the material by Andrés Roque, "Bólido de Fuego" and "Illusiónate Chica" stand out. Raúl Herrera, for his part, is the author of four songs: "Te Vi Llorar", "Concentration Camp", "RCM", and "Quien Vive". This last song begins with Walter Aray yelling the title. Wilfredo Sandoval only signed the dramatic "Condenado a Muerte". The album also includes a slower re-recording of his classic "Tema para Jóvenes Enamorados" and versions of "Leaves Dead", "Autopista" and "Feliz a tu Lado". The latter is a song, its North American origin would later be known,on his first LP. The voices in "Feliz a tu Lado" are by Jerry Lam Cam and Walter Aray Nozawa, in one of the few interventions of the human voice on a Los Belking's album.

The LP was a sales success. It had a first run of 10,000 copies in the first month and the record company took advantage of the pull to release a 45 with songs taken from the album: Bólido de Fuego / Leaves Dead. The group was requested by everyone, to the point of exhausting its members with so much morning, presentation in premises and on channel 4 programs. During those days they also accepted a proposal from Gustavo Galliani Diaz and recorded a 45 with Kela Gates . The single was made up of Nectar de verano (original by Nancy Sinatra ) and "I will reach you", both lyrics adapted to Spanish over the originals.

At the end of 1967 Jerry Lam Cam withdrew from the group to form Los Dragones with former vocalist Daniel Rosario, his cousin David Lam, and his brother recently arrived from Hong Kong.

The Belkings filled their position with Luis Pacora Rojas, a former 007 whom they had met two years earlier.

Lucho Pacora quickly joined the band, which already had a contract to record a second album. The press and the public had placed a lot of hope on the group, so Gustavo Galliani Diaz suggested that they collaborate with the National Symphony Orchestra for the LP they were about to record. His second LP, edited in 1968 and simply called "Los Belking's" is made up of nine own songs and three versions, two of them instrumentations of songs originally sung and recorded with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Shortly after they recorded their second 45 with Kela Gates , it contained the songs Al maestro con cariño and Loca por un loco .

At the beginning of 1969 they released their third LP: Los Fabulosos Belking's , consisting of seven songs of their own and five covers (four of which were originally sung), which left a bitter taste in the members of the band, who were not satisfied with the songs. results. Again he deserted the rhythmic base and in the summer of 1969 Raúl and Wilfredo were left alone again, but they did not hesitate to lock themselves in the studio and recorded "Tal Como tú Eres" and "Okinawa 2000" again.

At the end of 1969 in Peru the musicians felt that an era was ending, when General Velasco Alvarado ruled .

After a few months of rehearsals, the new Los Belking's line-up recorded in 1970 a self-titled miniplay with six songs: Atájame, Sentimientos, Sendas de Amor, Let Me, Triste Soledad and Charly. His interest in fusion with Latin rhythms is clearly noticeable. They had the collaboration of Víctor Cuadros in the arrangements and Las Midens in the choirs.

At the end of 1972 Wilfredo, who had had problems with his spine, was able to walk with due precautions. Wanting to make music again, he joined Raúl Herrera again and hired a few hours of recording with his money at the El Virrey Recording studios, becoming something unusual for the time: an independent producer. From these sessions the songs "Popeye the Woodcutter" and "Symphony for a Morning" (a beautiful melody with Brazilian influences ) would remain , later included in their 1973 album. In the studio they again had the collaboration of the Barreda brothers on the rhythmic base .

When El Virrey learned that Los Belking's had reunited and were recording, he called them to start negotiations and see the possibility of releasing a new LP.

Everything was fine, but if Los Belking's got together again they needed a new bassist and drummer, since the Barreda brothers were only collaborating with them to record two songs, and they needed musicians to perform live again. This is how they incorporated Freddy “Puro” Fuentes Aranda, a former neighbor of "Liverpool chico" and a member of La Nueva Cosecha, and on bass they incorporated Juan Carlos Cubas.

Shortly before recording the LP Ayer y Hoy, they went to Cuzco , hired to play at a school in the city. The ban on playing was for cinemas, but not for school classrooms.

Inspired by the atmosphere of the imperial city, they composed a song with certain Andean airs: "Oriundo Capitán". The arrangements of the LP Ayer y Hoy are the work of Víctor Cuadros. They also included the song "Years Cruentos", a potpourri of their best known songs with a narration in the voice of Gerardo Manuel . The first rock scene in Peru had suddenly disappeared and it was only giving its last and brilliant rants. Raúl and Wilfredo chose to leave the band in a suspense that in the end lasted thirty years.

Finally, they get to record a 45 for the IMSA label, with the songs Nieves, picos y valles, with autochthonous airs and charango; and on the other side a version of the bolero "El Reloj" that was also released in Bolivia.

In 2003, the Spanish label Nuevos Medios released a compilation of Los Belking's titled Instrumental Waves, which had unexpected international success.

The group returned to the stage and picked up where they left off.
