Here Come the Girls, Vol. 8 Review by Jason Ankeny.

 

The eighth edition in the invaluable Here Comes the Girls series returns to the same Pye and Piccadilly label vaults which yielded so many treasures over the course of earlier volumes; while not as consistently great as other HCTG sets, compilers Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart have hardly bled the well dry, unearthing at least a half dozen more lost classics from the heyday of the British girl groups. The highlights come from names largely unfamiliar on this side of the Atlantic -- Peanut's cover of the cultist favorite "Home of the Brave" does justice to Bonnie and Jody Miller's original American hit, while Lorraine Silver's reading of Shelley Fabares' "Lost Summer Love" absolutely blows the doors off the original, infusing the song with a Motown-inspired stomp (it later became a favorite on the Northern Soul club scene). Other choice cuts: Jackie Lee's bouncy "Love Is a Gamble," Pickettywitch's deliciously soulful "Dream World," and the reliably brilliant Jackie Trent's "Either Way I Lose." Also of note to collectors is the first-ever stereo release of Petula Clark's "Fancy Dancin' Man," which, as the title suggests, is not quite one of Pet's most transcendent moments.
