The Liverpool Beats ‎– The Liverpool Beats! (1964)

Don't confuse with  The Liverpool Beats ( The Excheckers ). This  is one story of the Liverpool sound boom, but another group - phantom  ...

Our The Liverpool Beats  aliases: The Liverpool Beats, The Mersey Beats,Billy Pepper, Billy Pepper And The Pepperpots...

When Merseybeat in general and The Beatles in particular broke big, virtually every record company dived in to try and cash in with either similar Liverpool based acts or soundalike recordings that would hopefully fool a few punters. Billy Pepper & The Pepperpots falls into the latter category, although Bill Shepherd and Jimmy Fraser, who put the whole package together, were certainly real. The two albums they recorded featured both eight original compositions done in a similar style and feel to Merseybeat, and would be placed alongside two Lennon-McCartney songs for comparison purposes. The two albums sold well, which would indicate one of two things; you can fool a lot of people or that the two main protagonists were a lot more talented than they were given credit for. As Bill Shepherd went on to produce The Bee Gees at the start of their career, we prefer the latter explanation.

Variants of the carpet ..,

but the essence is one...

For the most part the group was a studio entity only, although William Shepherd (also known as Billy Shears) assumed the role of Billy Pepper. If you look on the internet there are various sources claiming Billy replaced the ‘dead’ Paul McCartney in The Beatles.
In short, there wasn’t a group; this was a cash-in record done at a time when the American market in particular bought just about anything that had even a remote or tenuous link to Brtiain in general and Liverpool in particular.
